Sweetwater and Roscoe have been holding football camps this week for youngsters in the area as the 2011 high school season nears. Pictured is one of the many individuals who took part in the camps, which wrapped up on Wednesday.
Sweetwater played for the title Saturday at a Senior League (ages 15-16) Texas West 2 sectional tournament held in Garland, but lost the game to Waco Southern 5-1. Shown is Brandon Howell warming up after coming in to pitch while infielders Cole Maxwell, Dylan Bennett, Greg Aiken and James Clift watch.
GARLAND — After giving up 15 runs in a lopsided loss to Waco Southern two days earlier, Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars were much more competitive when the teams met again Saturday in the Texas West Section 2 championship game.
However, it still wasn’t enough as Waco Southern pulled away late to claim the title with a 5-1 victory at South Garland’s Little League complex and ad-vance to the state tourna-ment in Fort Worth.
WACO — After three straight losses to Fort Worth University — two of them in last year’s 9-10 year-old sectional tournament and the other this year — the players on Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old Little League team faced their nemesis again in a losers bracket final Saturday at the Texas West Section 2 tournament in Waco.
This time, the teams en-gaged in a thrilling contest that saw the teams locked in a 3-3 tie at the end of the regulation six innings.
GARLAND - Smarting from a onesided semifinal loss to Waco Southern a night earlier, Sweetwater’s Senior League (15-16 year-old) all-stars rebounded Friday with an 8-3 win over Dallas Wylie to reach Saturday’s Texas West Section 2 championship game at the South Garland Little League field.Â
WACO - Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars gave themselves a chance to play for the Texas West Section 2 championship by beating Wichita Falls, 10-0, on Friday at the Waco Midway Little League field.
The victory, which was Sweetwater’s second against Wichita Falls in the tournament, set up a rematch Saturday against Fort Worth University in the losers bracket final.Â
Sweetwater needed to defeat Fort Worth University in order to reach today’s championship game against Waco Midway that starts at 6 p.m., then beat Waco Midway in back-to-back games in order to capture the sectional title.Â
GARLAND - Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars had more runs, hits and baserunners on Thursday than they did in their opening win the previous day at the Texas West Section 2 tournament.
Unfortunately, there was little clutch hitting, and not nearly enough outstanding pitching and defense this time around as Waco Southern handed Sweetwater its first loss, 15-4, at the South Garland Little League complex.
WACO - After scoring 14 runs against Wichita Falls in Wednesday’s opener, Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars ran into a buzzsaw Thursday at the Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament as they fell to Fort Worth University, 10-0, in four innings.
Sweetwater, which failed to get a hit and had just one baserunner in the contest, must bounce back today in order to keep its sectional title hopes alive and stay in the tournament.Â
WACO - Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars used a 16-hit attack to crush Wichita Falls, 14-5, in Wednesday’s opening game of their Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament.
Sweetwater now faces Fort Worth University at 8:15 p.m. today and needs another win to move into the semifinals. If Sweetwater wins today, it will play Waco Midway at 8:15 p.m. Friday; if Sweetwater loses today, it will play The Colony at 6 p.m. Friday.
GARLAND - Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars built a 3-0 lead against Dallas Wylie in Thursday’s opening game of the Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament, then held off a late rally for a 3-2 win at the South Garland field.
Sweetwater will now play Waco Southern in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. today. The winner advances to Saturday’s championship game, while the loser plays an elimination game at 7:30 p.m. Friday and can still advance to Saturday’s title contest with a victory.
