SAN ANGELO — The Sweetwater High School girls golf team shot a 409 in Thursday’s final round of the Region I-3A tournament to finish in fourth place with a two-day 817 total.
Sweetwater finished well back of the top two teams. Andrews (325-643) and Snyder (370-742) grabbed the two berths and advance to the state tournament in Austin on May 2-3.
The Sweetwater Young Guns baseball team recently went to Wichita Falls to play in a USSSA 10-and-under tournament. In pool games, Sweetwater defeated the Breckenridge Mean Green 9-2 and the Holliday Eagles 12-6. Sweetwater ended up as the No. 2 seed going into bracket play until Mother Nature took over.
After finishing as the No. 3 team in District 5-3A, the Sweetwater softball team will next face Iowa Park in a Class 3A bi-district playoff.
The playoff has been set for Monday, April 30 in Graham at 7:30 p.m.
SHS tennis players fall in quarterfinals
LUBBOCK — Sweetwater High School’s entries at the Region I-3A tennis tournament were eliminated in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
It was simply no contest when visiting Snyder came to town Tuesday to face Sweetwater in a pair of key District 5-3A contests. The Tigers’ baseball team romped to an 11-0 win to nail down a playoff spot and damage the Mustangs’ hopes, while the Lady Tigers’ softball team rolled to a 14-1 victory to earn the No. 2 playoff seed from the district. Sweetwater, enjoying its best season in years, will still go to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed later this month after finishing 4-4 in district play, while Snyder winds up 5-3. Brownwood, with an 8-0 record, is the district champion.
Sweetwater’s Alex Castillo shot an 86 in Tuesday’s final round of the Region I-3A boys golf tournament to finish the event with a two-day score of 173.
Castillo was making his first regional golf appear-ance and played as a med-alist at Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo.
He was 26 shots off the winning two-day total of 147 carded by Taylor Grant of Wylie.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20
Today will be Sweetwater vs. Snyder day at both the baseball game at Newman Park at 7 p.m. and at the softball game that starts at 6:30 p.m. at Jerry Collins Complex, and the stakes are pretty high in both.
The baseball team’s situ-ation is the most critical as the Mustangs, with a 2-4 district record, may not be able to afford another loss to get into the playoffs.
A Sweetwater win would leave both teams 3-4 in district play with a game left.
Nolan County athletes of-ficially began their partici-pation in high school regio-nal competition Monday, though only one athlete — Sweetwater’s Alex Castillo — saw action.
