Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter is a single shot out of the lead at the Region I-3A golf tournament in Lubbock after the first round of play.
Mercer shot 72 Wednes-day at Meadowbrook Can-yon Course and trails only Perryton’s Hunter Wade. The tournament wraps up today and if Mercer puts together another solid round, he has a chance to advance to the Class 3A state tournament in Austin that is set for May 12-13.
This is Mercer’s third straight trip to regionals. The top two teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament.
Highland’s Ron Covington and Ethan Wilson teamed up to place fourth in JV boys doubles at the district tennis tournament.
After a first-round bye, they lost to Enriquez-McEl-rath of Santa Anna 8-0 before falling to Lopez-Sor-rells of Hermleigh, 8-5, in the third-place match.

LUBBOCK — The Sweet-water High School girls golf team finished in sixth place at the Region I-3A tourna-ment that ended Tuesday at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Canyon course, failing to pick up any ground despite a slight improvement during the final round of play.
Despite sweeping Snyder in District 5-3A play this season, while also finishing in a tie with Big Spring for third place in district after a 6-2, nine-inning victory on Tuesday at Snyder in its season finale, Sweetwater’s softball team will not get a chance at the playoffs. Big Spring and Sweetwater both finished with 3-5 records, but Sweetwater lost both district games to Big Spring this season.
Tuesday’s win was still a nice way to finish, and Sweetwater’s District 5-3A fate wasn’t sealed until Wylie (2-6) lost its finale to district champion Brown-wood 19-7 on Tuesday.
Although one of them is still alive in the chase for the No. 3 playoff spot in District 5-3A, the Sweet-water High School base-ball and softball teams will both go to Snyder today as underdogs.
LUBBOCK — The Sweet-water girls golf team enters today’s final round of the Region I-3A tournament at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Golf Course in sixth place after shooting a 375 in Mon-day’s opening round.

Andrews (328) currently leads the team standings by two shots over Snyder, with Burkburnett two more shots back at 332. Pecos is fourth with a 344 total and Monahans (349) is in cur-rently in fifth place.
