ABILENE — Wylie had plenty to celebrate when the No. 1-ranked Lady Bulldogs took the floor on their home gym for the final time this season on Friday, and com-pleted a perfect run through District 5-3A with an easy 64-38 win over Sweetwater.
It was also the final home game for a celebrated Wylie senior, with Peyton Little scoring 30 points to pace the victory.
ABILENE — Sweetwater stayed reasonably close to No. 22-ranked Wylie’s boys until late in the second quarter of the teams’ District 5-3A game Friday, but a huge 31-0 run that began at the point led to an 85-34 victory.
The Mustangs were trailing just 31-23 when Wylie’s Mike Lopez, who would score 28 points, hit two 3-pointers and a two-pointer to end the half.
Two of Lopez’s team-mates, Bryson Fowlkes and Patrick Walker, combined for six points and Lopez ran off eight more with two 3s thrown in again — his sixth and seventh three-pointers — to make it 53-23.
ABILENE — The Sweet-water freshman boys bas-ketball team led at the end of each quarter and held on Friday to defeat Wylie’s freshman boys, 50-48.
Isaiah McGee had 13 points and Rhett Torres 11 to pace Sweetwater, which is 3-3 in district, 12-6 for the season. Also scoring points were Duanta Williams with nine, Mar-tes Harris with seven, Bray Amos with six and J.P. Poe and Clay Kitchens with two each.
Sweetwater led 15-5 af-ter one quarter, 32-26 at halftime and 38-32 after three periods.
Another big night by Sier-ra Allen led to good things for Highland’s basketball teams as they pulled off a doubleheader sweep on Friday against Westbrook.
The Roscoe and Blackwell basketball teams came out on the losing end of their doubleheaders that were played Friday.
Roscoe’s boys, who are 1-7 in District 9-A, Division I, were defeated 45-18 by Hamlin in their game while the girls (4-5) lost 60-19 to Hamlin — ranked No. 14 in the state in Class 1A, Div. I — in their contest.
Blackwell finished 10-3 and was zone champion and second district runnerup in junior high boys basketball this season.
Jay Lomas of Sweetwater had a second-place finish in the 123-pound weight class when he competed at a powerlifting meet that was held Jan. 28 at Abilene High School. Lomas, whose name and accomplishment was inadvertently left out of a recent story about the meet, lifted a total of 790 pounds. Sweetwater placed second to Clyde in the team standings and will compete again on Thursday, Feb. 9 at a meet in Clyde along with the girls. The Reporter apologizes for the oversight in last Thursday’s story about the powerlifting meet.

The University Interscho-lastic League realignment finally arrived on Thursday and as usual, there were some surprises — both good and bad — for our county’s four high schools.
Given Sweetwater’s lack of athletic success recently, the general hope was that the UIL would put the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs in a more favor-able district than the current one (5-3A) with Wylie, Brownwood, Big Spring and Snyder, all with much higher enrollments and with the exception of Big Spring, a big winning tradition.
Sports Editor’s Note: Today’s Sweetwater Middle School ‘A’ boys basketball games against TLCA have been cancelled.
