Sweetwater High School’s three-day softball tournament begins today at the Jerry Collins Complex with eight games on the schedule. However, the host team — off to an impressive 4-1 start after beating Clyde, 4-3, on Tuesday in Clyde — will get the day off before playing its first tournament game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
After taking a week off, Sweetwater’s golf teams get back into action Friday with the boys going to Abilene Wylie’s one-day tournament and the girls hosting a tournament at Sweetwater Country Club that wraps up Saturday.
The girls tournament will begin Friday with tee times at 9 a.m. Sweetwater is ex-pected to have 18 players participating — three five-player teams in addition to three medalists. The top three teams and medalists will receive awards follow-ing Saturday’s conclusion of the 36-hole event.
Sweetwater never trailed in its season-opening base-ball game Tuesday at San Angelo Lake View, but was unable to put the Chiefs away as darkness forced the teams to settle for a 7-7 tie at the end of seven innings.
Sweetwater jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning Tuesday before Lake View came to bat, and also led 5-2 after a three-run fourth and 7-5 after a two-run sixth, only to see its advantage disappear each time.
After beginning its 2012 softball season by winning three of four games at the Abilene Ice Breaker tournament last week, Sweetwat-er’s Lady Mustangs will be headed back that direction today for a single varsity game in Clyde at 4 p.m. In addition, the Sweetwater JV softball team is scheduled to play its season opener against Clyde’s JV today following the varsity contest.

Taylor Jones and Sam Nemir of Sweetwater and Corey Hatcher of Roscoe will play for the North team at the FCA Myrle Greathouse All-Star Classic football game that kicks off at 7 p.m. June 2 at Shotwell Stadium.

Sweetwater High School will field a young baseball team when it begins its 2012 season Tuesday at San Angelo Lake View.
Only three seniors — none of whom held a starting spot a year ago — are on the roster. And of the 12 underclassmen, only five either started or got a significant amount of varsity playing time in 2011.
But those five players all earned first- or second-team all-district recognition, and two of them — outfielder Ryan Linebaugh and catcher Sean Morrow — are entering their third year as varsity starters.
