SHS girls hosting Golf Classic at SCC

February 24, 2011

Sweetwater High School resumes its 2011 girls sea-son on Friday by hosting the Sweetwater Golf Classic, a 36-hole event that will run through Saturday at the Sweetwater Country Club.
Play begins both days at 9:30 a.m., with a shotgun start planned Saturday.

Mustangs defeat L-View in opener

February 24, 2011

After 4 1/2 innings of Tuesday’s game, it looked as if the visiting San Angelo Lake View baseball team might literally walk to victory over Sweetwater in its 2011 season opener at Newman Park.
The Chiefs had just three hits, all singles, at that point, but they led 5-3 thanks primarily to 11 walks — four of them coming with the bases loaded.
But then Lake View opened the door to a Sweetwater rally, and the Mustangs pushed across five late runs to pull out an 8-5 victory.

Lady Stangs get win entering tourney

February 24, 2011

After an 8-3 win Tuesday at Hawley, the Sweetwater High School softball team is back above .500 (3-2) entering its annual three-day tournament that began with pool games today at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Kelsi Crosson, Alicia Finn, Suede Shirley and Jerren Villa each had two hits for the Lady Mustangs against Hawley, and Taylor McKoy pitched a seven-inning com-plete game to get the victory as she allowed just seven hits. She also had seven strikeouts and gave up just three walks. Finn tripled, while both Shirley and Villa doubled and Shirley and Crosson had two RBI.

Highland routs Bronte; regional tourney is next

February 23, 2011

SAN ANGELO — There was no fourth quarter rally this time.
By then Highland already had things well under con-trol at Angelo State Univer-sity’s Junell Center, thanks to a 15-4 third quarter surge that sparked the Lady Hornets to a lopsided 53-32 victory over Bronte in the teams’ regional quarterfinal playoff on Tuesday.
With the win, the Lady Hornets (22-11) advance to the Region II-A, Division II tournament that starts Friday and will be played at Abilene Christian Universi-ty’s Moody Coliseum.

Decade of excellence

February 22, 2011

It seems hard to believe, but there was a time not all that long ago when the Highland girls basketball team struggled mightily to get victories.
During the five seasons from 1995 to 2000, the Lady Hornets won a total of just 15 games, including an 0-21 mark the final year.
But the start of the new millennium also marked a new era for the program.
Under head coach Shea Baucom, Highland sudden-ly turned the corner starting with the 2001-02 season.

Lady Mustangs 3rd at Crane, go to Hawley today

February 22, 2011

Following a third-place finish by the Lady Mustangs this past weekend at Crane’s tournament, Sweetwater’s softball teams are back on the road today for a JV-varsity doubleheader at Hawley starting with the JV game at 6 p.m.

Mustangs hoping for a breakthrough 2011 season

February 19, 2011

Depending on how you look at it, the improve-ment in the Sweetwater baseball program the past two years has been either modest or significant.
The half-full view says that the Mustangs — who start their season Tuesday by hosting San Angelo Lake View at 6:30 p.m. — won six times as many district games as in 2007 and ‘08 combined. However, Sweetwater’s district rec-ord was still just 3-7 in both ‘09 and ‘10.
But there is good reason to believe that 2011 will be the breakthrough season that leads to a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Another fantastic finish

February 19, 2011

GRADY — It’s probably not the way they prefer to do it, but the Highland girls basketball team has discovered a winning formula in the playoffs.
The Lady Hornets, for the second time in as many postseason games, found themselves trailing with one quarter to play Friday against Wink. But just as it had done three nights earlier against Robert Lee, Highland staged a furious fourth-quarter rally to pull out a 47-41 victory.
