The Sweetwater High School boys golf team shot a two-day total of 683 to place eighth out of 21 teams at the Big Spring Invitational tournament last weekend.
Individually, Ryan Mercer shot 75-75-150 for a sixth-place medalist finish. As a team, Sweetwater shot 344 on Friday and 339 on Sat-urday. Big Spring won the team title (622) followed by Abilene Cooper (632), Snyder (639), Wylie (640), Plainview (647), San Angelo Central (674), Midland Lee (682) and Sweetwater.
Sweetwaterâ€™s baseball team beat Fort Stockton 8-0 and San Angelo Lake View 10-4 in its first scrimmage of the season Saturday at Big Spring. Kris Mayes cracked a two-run, first-inning homer against Fort Stockton and was also the starting pitcher, allowing just one hit in three innings before Sterling Reeves pitched a scoreless and hitless fourth. Sweetwater out-hit Stockton 14-5.
The Sweetwater softball team lost to Jim Ned, 8-2, in its season-opening game on Tuesday at Jim Ned.
The Lady Mustangs were held scoreless until a two-run sixth inning, while Jim Ned built a 6-0 lead by scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth and three runs in the fifth. Kendra Crosson and Taylor McKoy had RBI hits for Sweetwater and Suede Shirley finished 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, while on the mound McKoy pitched the first four innings and Alicia Finn worked the final two. McKoy finished with five strikeouts and Finn three, and McKoy allowed just three hits.
BRONTE â€” Highlandâ€™s Lady Hornets overcame a four-point deficit after three quarters to beat Robert Lee 36-31 in a Class 1A, Divi-sion II bi-district playoff on Tuesday.
Led by Sierra Allenâ€™s 11 points, Highland â€” which also trailed by two points, 14-12, at intermission â€” outscored Robert Lee 15-6 in the fourth quarter to advance to the area playoffs later this week. Highland (20-11), which forced seven turnovers in the final period, will now face Wink (22-3). The teams are scheduled to meet at Lenorah Grady at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
The Sweetwater High School girls placed first and the boys were fourth on Saturday at the Clyde powerlifting meet. Sweetwater hosts a qualifying meet this Saturday.
Three Nolan County high school boys basketball teams get to play the role of spoiler when they end their regular seasons today, although one of them still has a shot at advancing to the postseason playoffs.
The Highland girls basketball team has had three different head coaches in the past three years. But the program continues to be one of the most successful in West Texas at any level.
Highland (19-11), which was the District 11-A, Division II runnerup this season with a 10-2 record, is about to make its 10th consecutive playoff appearance. The Lady Hornets will take on Robert Lee (19-10), the third-place team from District 12-A, Division II, in a bi-district matchup at 7 p.m. today in Bronte.

The Roscoe boys basketball team needed a road win in Fridayâ€™s season-ending game to claim the final playoff spot from District 9-A, Division I.
But Munday had other ideas as the Moguls won, 68-42, to claim the third-place berth in the district.
