Roscoe gets a rematch with Moguls in playoffs

Although this has been a year of transition, one thing hasn’t changed at Roscoe — the Plowboys are once again in the playoffs.
However, first-year coach Jonathan Haseloff’s team is looking for a big change on the gridiron today when they face Munday’s Moguls in bi-district at 7:30 p.m. at Jim Ned High School.
Roscoe lost a 31-0 deci-sion to Munday in a non-district game in September, but the contest was closer than the final score might indicate.

Lady Mustangs beat Highland in opener

In a rare, season-opening all-Nolan County matchup between schools from different classi-fications, the larger school used a fast start to come out on top Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s Kinsey Browning hit a 3-pointer just 26 seconds into the game, giving her team a lead it never relinquished, as the 3A Lady Mustangs defeated the 1A Lady Hornets 57-45 at Highland’s gym.

Roscoe girls will go to state in CC

Roscoe High School qualified its girls cross country team for the state meet at Round Rock after a third-place finish Saturday at the Region II-A meet in Arlington. The top three teams and 10 individuals at regionals advance to state.
Jacinda Morales was the top individual for Roscoe, placing 10th with a time of 12:49. Other team members were Amber Craig, 37th (13:43.70); Mirian Solis, 40th (13:47.59); Justina Brasuell, 41th (13:47.59); Katie McIntire, 80th (14:28.93); Crystal Luna, 107th (15:01.58); and Kim Norris, 123rd (15:16.24).

Lady Stangs start year at Highland

Sweetwater and Highland begin their 2010-11 girls basketball seasons against each other today. Highland, ranked No. 12 in Class 1A, Div. II by the Texas Associ-ation of Basketball Coaches, will host the season opener that tips off at 6:30 p.m. following a JV game at 5 p.m.
Sweetwater was 12-19 a year ago and 0-10 in district while Highland was 19-8 and advanced to the Class 1A playoffs as the second-place team in its district behind Roby. The Lady Hornets earned their lofty ranking based on the fact that all-region players Callie Sandusky and Kara Hughey are back for another year.

Blackwell falls to Pan. Creek to end season

PANTHER CREEK — Blackwell lost to Panther Creek, 48-30, in its final game of the season Friday. No other information on the game was available at press time.
It was the first District 8, Division II six-man win for Panther Creek (3-7 overall). Blackwell ends 0-3 in district and 4-6 for the season.

Highland’s early lead slips away vs. Hermleigh

HERMLEIGH — A Highland team that hasn’t had much go its way this season started Friday’s final game against Hermleigh on a positive note. Thomas Stewart scored on runs of 7 and 42 yards to give the Hornets an early 14-0 lead, and Highland still led the Cardinals by seven, 20-13, after a 6-yard run by Peyton Howard in the second period.
But Hermleigh — despite allowing Stewart to run for 195 yards in the final game of an outstanding high school career — eventually went ahead by six, 26-20, at halftime, and by 13, 39-26, after three periods.

Roscoe is playoff-bound again

ROSCOE — For years, the Roscoe Plowboys have been blowing out district opponents and making the playoffs. And Friday’s 53-7 win over Rotan at Plowboy Field made it 13 straight trips to the postseason for one of the state’s most successful Class 1A programs.
The Smith boys — Caden and Collin — had a hand in seven of the eight touch-downs as Roscoe (3-2, 4-6)clinched the third and final playoff spot in District 7-A. Rotan dropped to 0-5, 1-9.

Highland JH gets 1st district win

Highland’s junior high football team tries to finish its season today against Hermleigh with a two-game winning streak after picking up its first district victory, 47-13, this past week against Aspermont.
Kevin Box had touchdown runs of 15 and 48 yards and returned an interception 20 yards for another score for Highland (1-1 district, 4-4 overall). Shelby Howard, Tracer Jones, Matthew Leyba and Jeremy Hall also had scoring runs for the Hornets. Howard kicked two extra points and Branson Thomas had an extra point run. Howard was the top rusher with 77 yards on two carries.

Trying to end on a high note

Three Nolan County football teams come into Friday’s season finales with hopes of ending on a positive note. But for one of them, a win assures another game next week and a whole new outlook with the start of postseason play.
Thanks to a 33-12 win over Ralls, Roscoe is on the verge of claiming a 13th straight playoff berth as the No. 3 team from District 7-A, Division II. The win improved the Plowboys to 2-2 in district.

Fox is named player of week

Cameron Fox is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Fox, who is a 5-9, 155-pound senior, was a starting split end and cornerback for the Mustangs this year. Against Brownwood, Fox recorded a team-high six solo tackles, one for a loss, and assisted on another tackle while on offense, he caught one pass for seven yards in the team’s final game of the season.
