Tuesday’s scheduled 7 p.m. District 5-3A baseball contest at Newman Park between Sweetwater and Brownwood was can-celled because of lighting problems at the park, according to Sweetwater coach Roland Herrera. The game has been rescheduled for today starting at 4:30 p.m.
Sweetwater brings an 0-1 district record into the game, which is the first of four consecutive district home games. Brownwood, the defend-ing District 5-3A cham-pion, is 1-0.
Sweetwater’s Sam Nemir and Ryan Linebaugh finished in 10th and 11th place, respectively, among Class 3A lifters in the 165-pound weight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division II meet that was held on Saturday in Abilene.
Sweetwater High School’s girls golf team is in second place after hosting the first round of the district golf tournament on Tuesday at Sweetwater Country Club, although no Lady Mustang is currently among the top five medalists.
Sweetwater shot 370 as a team to outdistance everyone except Snyder, which shot 341 to take a 29-stroke lead in the 54-hole event, which resumes next Monday at Wylie.
Sarah Witt had Sweetwa-ter’s best individual round. Witt carded a 90, putting her in a tie for sixth place and nine out of the lead.

The Sweetwater High School boys golf team went to Brownwood for the first leg of the District 5-3A tournament on Monday and shot a 324 for third place after the opening round.
With two 18-hole legs to play in the 54-hole event, Sweetwater trails only Big Spring, which has the lead with a 308 total, and Wylie, which shot 318. Snyder is fourth (331), followed by Snyder’s No. 2 team (346) and Wylie No. 2 (361).
For both the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams, today marks the beginning of perhaps the most import-ant part of their seasons.
Both teams will be playing their next four District 5-3A games in front of their home fans, starting with Brownwood today.
The Lady Mustang softball team (1-1 in district, 10-9 overall) plays at 5 p.m. while the baseball team — which is 0-1 in District 5-3A and 10-11-1 for the season — will begin its game against Brownwood at 7 p.m.
The Sweetwater girls golf team shot a 356 total this past Thursday for a 59-shot win at the Lamesa tournament. Members of the team are, pictured above from left, Elise Lawrence, Sarah Witt, Jodie May, Alex Gomez and Amy Witt. Gomez was a second-place medalist with an 86. Sweetwater will be hosting the first leg of the District 5-3A golf tournament at Sweetwater Country Club on Tuesday.
It was a non-district game against a Class 2A opponent. Still, Friday’s 19-4 romp against Crane at Jerry Collins Complex was a very impressive way for the Sweetwater softball team to begin a five-game homestand.
The 19 runs represented the Lady Mustangs’ highest output of the year, and they needed less than four full innings to amass their total — as well as get 13 hits — against Crane.
