Students on the Sweetwater Intermediate School Jump Rope Team recently performed during halftime of a basketball game at Baylor University. They will perform at a San Antonio Spurs game on Saturday.
The West Texas Barrel Racing Association will have their 2014 Extravaganza in Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum this year, after having the event in Abilene for over 20 years. "Sweetwater has been so gracious to us," said West Texas Barrel Racing Association President Jennifer Bufkin.
A campus report from East Ridge Elementary was given during the March meeting of the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees.
Several second and third graders joined principal Vicki Mayberry to inform board members about the programs that are taking place on campus.
Students are learning how to play chess, in which the different game pieces were explained and the chess move "knight's corral" was demonstrated. In addition, "The Zone" allows students to work on their math and reading skills by reading aloud and answering questions thirty minutes a day.

A resolution honoring the Regional Spelling Bee Champion, Sweetwater Middle School student Kara Lehnert, was also presented at the March meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees. Texas State Technical College West Texas will offer evening classes for the Diesel Technology and Pipe Welding programs beginning this fall. The demand for Diesel and Pipe welding graduates continues to increase due to recent oil plays in the area. Students will attend Monday through Thursday from 6-10 p.m. and on Saturdays.

$25 million project could begin as early as mid-summer
Over the last two years, nearly 25 percent of rural communities in Texas have seen the closure of their local hospitals. Despite these changes and ongoing challenges in the healthcare industry, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) in Sweetwater has seen incredible growth and expansion.
Funeral services for Ronnie Lee Gardner, 63, of Sweetwater will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Salem Lutheran Church in Roscoe. Rev. Dean Quade and Rev. Pat Quade will officiate. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Gardner died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 21, 1951, in Fisher County.
The 2013 financial audit was presented at Monday night's meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District's board of directors' meeting, held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
Highlights of the report conducted by Durbin and Company were given, in which a clean and unqualified opinion was given. With a new company in charge of the audit, the format of the report saw some changes and some new standards were seen.
