Many volunteer at bicycle rodeo

There was an excellent turn out recently at the bicycle rodeo held at 4th and Elm in the First Baptist Church parking lot. There were many volunteers from many different agencies that helped to make it a truly wonderful event. 

North stars

James Clift (left) and Stephen May, both 2014 Sweetwater High School graduates, played starring roles for the North all-stars in their 3-0 win over the South on Friday at the inaugural Fellowship of Christian Athletes base-ball game in San Angelo. Clift was named the MVP of the game and May was the winning pitcher.

Local athletes help North teams pick up all-star wins

ABILENE — Three more recently-graduated Nolan County high school athletes were on the winning North teams Saturday for the conclusion of the three-day Big Country Chevy Dealers-Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes All-Star Festival.
Micaela Reschman, a 2014 Sweetwater High School graduate, was a member of the North volleyball team that won 25-16, 25-23 over the South in a game held at Wylie High School’s gym.

AJRA coming back to Sweetwater

An update on the Nolan County Coliseum was given at the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors meeting held Monday by Coliseum Manager Jeff Howard.
The Coliseum was built in 1959, with the Annex built in 1961. The multi-purpose event center has played host to a wide variety of events, including rodeos, equestrian shows, livestock shows, rattlesnake roundups, banquets, trade shows, weddings, and much more.
There are five full-time employees at the Coliseum, with one part-time employee. Additional part-time employees are hired for some events.

Sweetwater Healthcare celebrates CNA Week

Sweetwater Healthcare Center is celebrating CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) Week, June 12 through 19, by having their residents present awards. The facility is also introducing their new Director of Nurses, Valerie Pruitt, who is from the community.
Pruitt graduated from Loraine High School and is also a double graduate of TSTC for both her LVN in 1997 and RN in 2010. She worked in long-term care as an ADON for 10 years, then assisted with the nursing program and CNA program at TSTC, and later spent three years in Hospice.

Company makes presentation to county for new internet service

During Monday's Nolan County Commissioners meeting, Mark Mims and Les Sanderson with Balatize, LLC made a presentation on the possibility of providing the Courthouse and new jail with internet service.
The company develops networks and provides high-speed connectivity needed in the area. Founded in August 2013, Balatize went live on February 1st of this year.
Mims serves as president, with Sanderson as the CTO and secretary. The company has local investors and serves 50 clients and businesses, including Midwest Finance, EC&M, Smartt Move Trucking and Ludlum Measurements.

Ruby Acuna

Trent — Ruby Acuna, 90, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 in a local hospital. A rosary was said at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel. A mass took place at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13, at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church with Reverend Terry Brenon officiating. Burial was in the Trent Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.

Twenty-two girls participated this past week in a Lady Mustang Softball Camp held at the Jerry Collins Complex.
In no particular order are Kara Gomez, Kyra Gomez, Mikayla Gilmore, Madyson Gilmore, Ariah Olguin, Xandria DelaCruz, Ellie Espinoza, Alyssa Gomez, Kiara Garcia, Addison Sloan, Vanessa Bugarin, Kaitlyn Vera, Alexis Gonzales, Kallie Gonzales, Hailey Minton, Faith Rosas, Summer Crain, Madison Soles, Aaliyah Martinez, Makenzie Ince, Hadyn Rotan and Becky Castillo.

Sports camps

Two All-American Vol-leyball Camps will be held in Sweetwater.
A camp for students entering grades 6-8 will be held June 16-17 from 3:45-5:45 p.m. both days at the Sweetwater Middle School gym. Also, a camp for students entering grades 9-12 will be held June 16-18 at the SMS gym with two sessions: from 9-11:30 a.m. and also 12:30-3 p.m. The cost is $153 per player.
