Raymond Neil Beeks

September 11, 2014

Mr. Raymond Neil Beeks, 69 of Hermleigh, TX died on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014 after a sudden illness.
Service for Mr. Neil Beeks will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Hermleigh First United Methodist Church with Reverend Elizabeth Billingsley and Reverend Daniel Ramey officiating. Internment will follow at Hermleigh Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

William Christopher (Chris) Birkla

September 11, 2014

William Christopher (Chris) Birkla, age 52, of Sweetwater, passed away on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 in Albuquerque, New Mexico after a brief illness.
His body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

SW eyes 3-0 start

Sweetwater overcame a long road trip, rain and late turnovers this past Friday for a 32-27 win at Muleshoe to go 2-0 for the first time since 2006. Isaiah McGee’s 30-yard interception return for a TD with 5:32 left provide the winning points for the Mustangs, who trailed 21-18 at halftime.

7th grade ‘B’ begins season at Dublin

The Sweetwater seventh grade ‘B’ football team went to Dublin for its season op-ener on Tuesday and lost by a score of 22-6.

Today, September 11, a free cholesterol screening, sponsored by Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th Street in Sweetwater.
Also, Story Hour at the County-City Library for parents and their children will be at 10:45 a.m.

Sweetwater to help make wish come true for first grader

In the midst of this weekend's Homecoming activities, an even greater celebration will take place to make one little boy's wish come true.
In partnership with the Make a Wish Foundation, there will be a parade at Newman Park starting at 10 a.m this Saturday for Randy Rodriguez, a six-year-old first grader at Sweetwater ISD who was recently diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor and is already under hospice care.
"Randy is very timid, and he doesn't believe that wishes come true," said Kent Wright, one of the event organizers.

Perry wins Senate seat

Former Mayor Wortham earns 13 percent of votes
AUSTIN — Six candidates vied for the vacant Senate District 28 seat, but it was TEA Party-backed Republican Charles Perry — a 1980 Sweetwater grad — who claimed the victory.
Perry, a CPA in the private sector for 30 years and two-time District 83 Texas House Representative, nabbed just over 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff election. Senate District 28 comprises 51 counties, including Nolan.

Kids on the Land, Buzzi Unicem USA to host students at plant

Richard Zimmel, Buzzi Unicem USA Plant Manager and Darrell Doggett, Environmental and Energy Manager, recently met with Peggy Maddox and Katherine Dickson from Kids On the Land to make plans for an upcoming event at the plant for sixth grade students from Highland, Blackwell and Roscoe school districts.

Many attend ribbon cutting of RPMH Cardiac Rehab & Wellness Center

Shown above is only a fraction of the crowd that showed up to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning for the ribbon cutting at the new Cardiac Rehab and Wellness Center. Tours of the facility were also given.
