Highland will begin its season today vs. Matadors

August 28, 2014

Highland will be the first area football team to start play tonight. The Hornets will face Motley County in their first game as a 1A team at 6 p.m. to begin Jayton’s three-day Gridiron Classic.
The teams played a thril-ler last year, the Matadors winning 62-59 to start the year. Tonight is the debut for Kyle Jeffrey, who coached at Highland 10 years ago as an assistant, as head coach.

Spikers outlast Breck, top Graham

Sweetwater edged Breck-enridge in a five-game thril-ler to start its doubleheader here Tuesday, then came back to sweep Graham 3-0 and improve to 11-7 this season in volleyball action at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater beat Brecken-ridge 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 17-15 in its opener.

Mitchell County senior citizen dance to be held tonight

Tonight, August 28, the Mitchell County Senior Citizen Dance will be held at the Colorado City Civic Center, located at 157 W. 2nd Street from 7-10 p.m. There will be live music and everyone is welcome.
Snacks are also welcome. There will be an entry fee per person; call Faye at 254-654-5785.

Today will be partly sunny with a high near 95. Winds will be from the south around 10 mph, and after 1 p.m., we'll have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Expect those rain chances to increase to 50 percent tonight, with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 71. Winds will be from the southeast around 10 mph.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised nearly $80 million over the last month. These viral videos have been sweeping Big 12 campuses, as administrators and coaches have been heavily involved in raising awareness and money.

Sweetwater residents accept 'Ice Bucket Challenge'

You may have heard about the "Ice Bucket Challenge," which has been sweeping the nation for the past few weeks. Even in Sweetwater, dozens of people of all ages have accepted the frigid task in the hopes of spreading awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The challenge is simple: one must donate at least $100 to the ALS Foundation, or have a large, frigid bucket of ice water dumped over their head. Upon completing the challenge, that person can nominate others to complete the task.

Family RV will serve as sponsor for 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic

Starting on Thursday, the high school football season will officially kick off in Sweetwater when the 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic starts a three-day, three-game run at Mustang Bowl.
Grape Creek and Haskell meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Classic opener. On Friday, Sweetwater hosts Lubbock High with kickoff also set for 7:30 p.m. The Classic will then conclude its run Saturday when a pair of Class 6A schools — Lubbock Coronado and Weatherford — meet in an afternoon game at 3 p.m.
