Sweetwater Municipal Band to perform at Broadway Lights

When the Applause Music Series opens on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium, "Broadway Lights" will feature a hometown staple--the Sweetwater Municipal Band, directed by Billy Weems.
The Sweetwater Municipal Band was restarted in 1989, after a lapse of about 50 years. One of the founding members, Richard Smola, knew of the past history because his father-in-law, George Thompson, had been an active member in the Sweetwater Municipal Band in the 1930s.

National Night Out comes to Sweetwater

September 29, 2014

Community awareness is a major key to fighting crime. In hopes of promoting such awareness, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) began holding a countrywide event: National Night Out (NNO), in 1984.
This year, National Night Out will be officially recognized in Sweetwater for the first time, as the police and fire departments are publicizing the Oct. 7 event.

Unbeaten SW soars past Andrews

ANDREWS — The visit-ing Mustangs sure didn’t take long to adjust in their final non-district game of the season on Friday.
Sweetwater’s T.C. Huitt returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and his teammates joined in to help build a 28-0 lead after one quarter.

Roscoe, Blackwell check win column

September 29, 2014

Roscoe and Blackwell collected their second victories of the 2014 football season on Friday.
The Plowboys and Hor-nets are 2-3 overall after their second win in three games, but Highland (1-3) lost to a 5-0 Robert Lee team which won over Blackwell just one week earlier.

SHS falls to B-Spring in district tennis opener

Sweetwater High School’s tennis team lost all but one match in its district opener vs. Big Spring on Tuesday. Gisela Solano won 6-2, 6-3 in girls singles.
