FBI confirms remains found positively identified as those of Hailey Dunn

On March 16, 2013, local authorities were notified of human remains located near Lake J.B. Thomas in southwest Scurry County. The remains were sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification for DNA analysis. On April 26, 2013, the Scurry County District Attorney's office received written confirmation that the remains have been positively identified as those of Hailey Dunn.

'What Women Love' event this weekend

Women are known for loving a great many things—family, friends, diamonds, chocolate, roses — the list could go on and on. But, this weekend, a number of Sweetwater women are joining together to say that women also love helping other women. Specifically, ladies from our community will be gathering to help the 27 million women and children worldwide who are caught in the human trafficking industry.

TSTC graduation tonight

On Friday evening, 98 graduates will walk across the stage, most already placed in the Texas workforce, supporting our local and state economies.
Software and Business Accounting graduate, Amy Austin, is a single mother of two boys. She has worked hard over the past two years to complete her Associate Degree, but Austin says it was worth it. Austin traveled to the state capitol last week to represent TSTC West Texas at the TSTC Legislature Day. There she toured the capitol and meet with local representatives Susan King and Jim Keffer.

Trent honored as West Texas Funeral Director of the Year

Local funeral director and owner of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home in Sweetwater, Jackie Trent received the 2012-2013 West Texas Funeral Director of the Year Award at the WTFDA banquet that was held Tuesday, April 16, in Odessa.  He is pictured (center) with his wife, Dianne Trent (right) and their daughter Marcie Crisp.

NCSO makes presentations at county meeting

During Monday's meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners, a few presentations were heard from the Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO).
Sheriff David Warren made the presentations, in which one of them dealt with a contract between Nolan County and Mitchell County to house inmates from Nolan County.
Warren said that he had been approached with the deal by the sheriff of Mitchell County to consider using their facilities to house overflow prisoners from Nolan County. At this time, Nolan County has similar agreements with Garza, Taylor and Runnels counties.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued four citations and made three arrests on April 24, 2013.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Spring fever is a common thing for many people in late April when the weather begins to stay warmer.
Fans of the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams, though, have another name for it: playoff fever.
Since softball was adopted as a UIL sport, this is the first time for the Lady Mustangs (20-13) and the Mustangs (15-12) to both advance to the playoffs. In fact, in that 17-year span prior to 2013, each of the programs had gone to the playoffs just three times. But that’s all changed.
