Roscoe teams stay unbeaten

Both of Roscoe’s junior high boys basketball teams will finish 2013 undefeated after wins over Hermleigh this past Monday that leaves them with 6-0 records.
Roscoe ‘A’ won its contest, 35-13, with Hermleigh despite a scoreless second half. Jose Ortega and Tait Fullwood led the win with 12 points each. Also scoring were Francisco Garcia with three points and Parker Payne, Paul Pantoja, John Castillo and Camden Boren with two. Roscoe ‘B’ also won, 28-15. Nicholas Limones and Mas-on Hernandez had eight points, Andrew Deleon four and Will Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Ty Fullwood and Jr Guia with two.

Exploration of Cline Shale moving forward

What kind of success are companies enjoying in drilling in the Cline Shale? Is the play moving east toward Sweetwater? When will the region experience the anticipated boom from the Cline Shale?
The answers to those questions are not as easily attainable as one might expect. First of all, one must realize that most of the drilling activity on the eastern shelf of the Permian Basin has nothing to do with the Cline Shale.

Cupp honored at Pioneer Museum Christmas celebration

Chase Sims honored with Winnie and D.M. Wiggins Medal

Chase Sims was one of three students surprised with special awards during Hardin-Simmons University’s Dec. 14, 2013, graduation ceremonies.
For outstanding scholarship and service to the university, Sims was awarded the Winnie and D.M. Wiggins Medal. The honor is bestowed at the close of the winter semester each year for academic excellence throughout his or her entire college career. The recipient must have also spent three or more years in residence; and excel in character, personal development, and academic achievement.

Buzzi Unicem honored by Workforce Solutions

On Wednesday Buzzi Unicem USA, located in Maryneal, was honored at the Workforce Solutions Board meeting. They were recognized for receiving the Local Employer of Excellence Award for the Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas, at the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) 17th Annual Texas Workforce Conference held Dec. 4-6 in San Antonio. The Local Employer Award of Excellence Award honors employers that are actively involved with their local Workforce Board and have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.

SHS gives campus report at school board meeting

A campus report was given by Sweetwater High School principal Stacy Jones at Monday night's meeting of the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) board of trustees.
In continuing with an initiative started last school year by the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, high school seniors can purchase a ceiling tile at any spot in the hallway for $5 and decorate it following their acceptance to college. The students are then given their tiles at the senior dinner held at the end of the school year.

Clara Lorain Hill, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 in Midland.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Dusty Lovell officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Fairview Cemetery in Midland with Dusty Lovell officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
