Two contracts were considered for approval during Mondayâ€™s meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners.
A contract was approved with Lexis Nexis for access to their legal research data for the County Attorneyâ€™s office. The commissioners were presented with the information prior to the meeting by county attorney Lisa Peterson, who stated that the access is the most cost-effective route among three options.
James Melvin Veal, 72, of Sweetwater, was born on Nov. 29, 1940, in Fort Worth to Melvin and Mary Veal. James met with his maker on Aug. 14, 2013 at 10 p.m. at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. James was a cook for many of the local restaurants, including Stars Drive-In, Rosaâ€™s Cafe and Jackâ€™s Steakhouse. He served his country while being in the United States Navy. James enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, dancing, cooking and most of all spending time with his family. James married his wife Brenda Hale on July 23, 1991. They were married for 22 years before his departure.
Marshall Neilan Pior, age 89, of Sweetwater, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ with Mike Crowley officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at the funeral home.
Two years after a winless season on the field, Black-wellâ€™s Hornets are eyeing a second straight postseason appearance heading into the 2013 season.
Clint Lowry immediately turned the Hornets into a contender when he took over the program last year, guiding the Hornets to a runnerup finish in District 8, Division II Six-Man and their first playoff trip in four years before losing 49-22 to Loraine in bi-district.

TSTC West Texas will graduate 110 students on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center. Â
The Digital Arts program is graduating its very first cohort of artists, which includes Jarrad Hamilton who opened his first show at the Center for Contemporary Arts during Artwalk last week. Kathryn Black, an outstanding Welding Technology graduate is a non-traditional student and has climbed to the top of her class. She has ambitions of working as an underwater welder. Â

Four county employees were recognized during Monday morning's county commissioners meeting held at the Nolan County Courthouse.
In attendance to receive their awards were Jerry Watts, who celebrated 10 years with the county as Assistant Jail Administrator, along with county auditor Judy Kasper for her 15 years of service.
Library Circulation Clerk Eloisa Hernandez and Coliseum worker Pablo Sosa were also honored, as they celebrated 5 and 10 years, respectively, serving the county in their positions.
The City of Sweetwater officially made an appointment for the position of City Secretary/City Comptroller during Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
Approval was given for Patty Torres to fill the role, which will be effective this Friday. Following the resignation from Carolyn Lawrence a year ago, Torres has served in an interim role while also continuing her other duties.
Funeral services for Virgil Wayne "Jack" Stacy, 84, of Sweetwater will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with a 3 p.m. graveside service at Nancy Smith Cemetery near Glen Rose, Texas. Pastor Eric Von Atzigen will officiate with funeral services under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Stacy died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at his home.
