Itâ€™s been five long years since Sweetwater fielded a playoff team.
Put another way, none of the current Mustangs were in high school the last time it happened in 2008.
Reserved season football tickets for the 2013 season are up for renewal to current option holders and may be purchased during regular business hours at the Sweetwater ISD administration office through Fri-day, Aug. 30. Tickets are $30 for five home games. Reserved ticket sales for the general public go on sale Monday, Sept. 2 through Friday, Sept. 13, also during regular business hours at the Sweetwater ISD administration office. Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard saw NFL action for the first time this season Friday with the Minnesota Vikings in the teamâ€™s preseason opener with the Houston Texans.
Banyard, a 24-year-old running back, had eight yards on four carries and also caught a 4-yard pass in the game, which the Vikings lost 27-13. He is trying to make the teamâ€™s 53-player roster this year after ending last season on the Vikingsâ€™ practice squad.
With no starters and only two lettermen â€” seniors Kayla Chowning and Mikki Reschman â€” coming back following a 24-win season, Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s volleyball team will enter the 2013 campaign in full rebuilding mode.
Aly Heredia, Shaneese Brown, Lena Lovelady, Zig-gy Collins, Maddie Jones, Mikealah Foust, Morgan Gomez and either Kensi Chowning or Maddie Berry are the other members of the varsity squad, which starts its season with a 6:15 p.m. match Monday at San Angelo Grape Creek before a dual match at home with Water Valley and Seminole on the following day.
The Roscoe Collegiate High School Varsity cheerleaders will be hosting Cheer Pals for girls Pre-K through sixth grade. Cheer Pals will be practicing on Monday, August 12 through Wednesday, August 14 from 5:30-7 p.m. each day at the RCHS cafeteria. This month the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps will offer training conducted by Scott Davis, USAF Retired. Verbal Judo is a way of using words as a way to maintain mental and emotional safety. This kind of â€śconflict managementâ€ť involves using posture and body language, tone of voice and choice of words as a means for calming a potentially volatile situation before it can manifest into physical violence. The public is invited join the BCMRC for this training on Monday, Aug. 12, at the Training Room at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. The training will begin at 7 p.m.
Wal-Mart is supporting Sweetwater Independent School District in a unique way this weekend. Going until Sunday, a Sweetwater ISD bus will be parked in front of Wal-Mart.Â They have added a banner that says Fill the Bus for Our Kids. They are encouraging people to buy school supplies and leave them on the bus for students at Sweetwater ISD. The supplies will be donated to each campus.
Both main lanes of westbound Interstate 20 at the US 84 overpass in Nolan County are scheduled for closure the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 12 for ongoing bridge replacement work. The closure will continue through Tuesday, Aug. 13, and lanes will be open the following day.
Traffic will be detoured to US 84 Business and routed around the overpass before being directed back to westbound I-20.Â Signs, cones and message boards will be in place to direct drivers.

Richard W. Fergeson State Farm will be hosting a Back-to-School Bash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.
They will be serving hot dogs and drinks and will have games for children to play. Prizes for games will include school supplies for students. The event is not just for State Farm customers, but for the entire community.
