Sixteen WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) arrived in Sweetwater on Saturday for the ninth annual WASP Homecoming at the National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, at Avenger Field.
From 1942 to 1944, Avenger Field in Sweetwater was home to the WASP, a select group of brave and patriotic women who were trained to fly and ferry military aircraft between Air Force bases throughout the United States

Two West Texas natives are hoping to make a name for themselves in the world of writing, all while using Sweetwater as the backdrop for their most recent book.
Jon L. Brown grew up in Sweetwater during the 1960s and '70s while his father, Mike, served as the District Conservationist at the Soil Conservation Service. While his brothers Jack and Jim graduated from Sweetwater High School, Jon's family moved after his sophomore year to Mount Pleasant, Texas.
Due in part to federal regulations, the lunch prices within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) will see an increase this fall.
The SISD Board of Trustees approved the increase during their meeting held on Monday evening. School districts are required to increase their prices as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which came about through the "Let's Move" campaign initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Officers with the Sweetwater Police Department, with the help of the Nolan County Sheriff's Office and the 32nd Judicial District Attorney's Office Investigators, received a call about stolen property, obtained a search warrant, executed the search warrant and returned the stolen items, all in one day.

Big Boy's Bar-B-Que in Sweetwater has achieved that very feat, as they returned to the list compiled by Texas Monthly magazine of the Top 50 Barbecue Joints. Although the list only covers restaurants within the state, the front magazine cover boasts--scribbled in barbecue sauce--that the eateries are the best in the world.
A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 3-6 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost of $35 includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The campâ€™s goal is to improve playersâ€™ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.
Three senior all-district members of this yearâ€™s Sweetwater High School baseball team â€” Sean Morrow, Cole Maxwell and Shawn Campbell â€” have been chosen to play in a high school all-star game on June 2 at Lub-bock Cooperâ€™s Pirate Field in Woodrow. They will be playing for the East team in the Class 3A East-West all-star game that is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
SHS head coach Roland Herrera will serve as a coach for the East squad, along with Big Springâ€™s Bert Otto.
Closing ceremonies for the Sweetwater Fastpitch Softball Association will be Tuesday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerry Collins Softball Complex. Also, closing ceremonies for Sweet-water Little League will be Wednesday, May 29 from 5-9 at the city pool (T-Ball through Junior League).
