District snapshot completed, results presented

A district snapshot was recently conducted within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District), in which the recently-received results were presented at the December meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees.
Along with this first matter, two other reports were presented during the meeting, in which all three required no action from the board. The district snapshot took place to comply with the state's AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) results.

Spirit of Christmas to drive in 19,000 boxes of nonperishable food for needy families

The 31st annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive will soon be complete, and Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores and partnering service groups and food pantries expect to provide a little more than 19,000 boxes of food for families in need throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
Volunteers have packed food in boxes provided by the grocery company and all will complete the distribution of those before Christmas, along with 19,000-plus coupons for a free roasting hen—also provided by BGC.

Max Sturdivant of Waco, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
Services were at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at Sparks Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Wimberley and Rev. Delbert Taylor officiating. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Bellmead Funeral Home.

Franklin D. Hyde

Just a few words are needed to describe 1st Sgt Franklin D. Hyde (USAR, ret); using the words of Col. P. Mallory, Brig. Commander: “proficient, calm in crisis, a trusted counselor, stern disciplinarian yet extremely fair to his soldiers. He could always be counted on to state his views even though they may not be popular.” 

Don L. Graham

Funeral services for Don L. Graham, 55, of Roscoe, will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater with Rev. Brian Brownlow officiating. Interment will follow at Loraine Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Full honors will be held by the Texas Department of Public Safety Honor Guard at the graveside.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Graham died Saturday, Dec. 22, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Bernie R. Free

Bernie R. Free
Bernie R. Free, 82, of Westminster, CO passed away on Dec. 13, 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Free, of Westminster, CO; and his daughter, Rhonda Free, of Boulder, CO.
His son, Randy, preceded him in death in 1995. 
A private memorial service will be held.

Harold Carl Althof

Funeral services for Harold Carl Althof, 70, of San Antonio and formerly of Roscoe, will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at First Baptist Church in Roscoe with Rev. Les Hollon officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Althof died Saturday, Dec. 22, in San Antonio.
He was born Oct. 19, 1942, in Sweetwater. He married Rita Flowers on June 1, 1963, in Ralls, TX and Patricia Nations on Nov. 22, 2008, in San Antonio.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 114 calls for service, issued 15 citations and made eight arrests from Dec. 21-23, 2012.

The SPD received 59, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Unauthorized use of a vehicle — 1700 block of Hailey.
• Credit/debit card abuse — 500 block of E. Broadway.
• Information only — 200 block of E. Louisiana.
• Counterfeiting — 200 block of NE Georgia.

Arrested by SPD:
• Della Ybarra, 54 — Driving while license invalid.
• Brittany Edwards, 23 — Theft.
• Carlos Galindo, 22 — Public intoxication.

TSMCA all-region — Blackwell, Highland players honored

A total of nine Nolan County football athletes have been given all-region honors from the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association.
Blackwell’s Jayden Jones was named to the all-region Division II, Region II first team as both a running back and a linebacker. Blackwell’s Mason Magness and Ted Chambliss made the second team at cornerback and safety, respectively while Cody Shamblin, Mark Monroe and Franck Cano received all-region honorable mention.

Two area teams win

The Highland girls improved to 15-3 this season by with a 68-26 victory over Throckmorton on Thursday, while the Blackwell boys (3-10) got their first District 14-A, Division II win Friday with a 54-24 victory over Sterling City.
Sierra Allen had 15 points, Madison Moseley 14, Han-nah Allen 11 and Beth Richburg 10 for Highland while Lora Stewart scored eight, Kaylee Martin six and Schyler Kimbrell four for Highland’s girls, who came up with 31 of their points in the second quarter.
