Billy Sol Jones

July 13, 2013

Billy Sol Jones, 48, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013. A memorial service will be held in his honor at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at The Sweetwater J.C. Barn, 307 West 4th Street.
Billy was born on Feb. 10, 1965, in Sweetwater, to parents Guy Dwight and Sandra Bentle Jones. He met and married Mary Costello on Sept. 2, 1988. He enjoyed driving old backroads taking pictures and camping in the mountains. He loved life, politics and a good debate.

Brandy Wilson, missionary to Argentina to speak at Cornerstone Fellowship

Hurting? So often we are reminded of the determination that God had (and still has) to rescue mankind. This Sunday, Brandy Wilson, a missionary to Argentina, will be speaking about ministering to women that are held captive in the sex slave industry in Argentina. Our world is rapidly changing with the prostitution of the innocent in so many countries.

Summer sports camps set

There are still a few summer sports camps left for local students to attend before the new school year begins.
A Mustang Golf Camp will be held July 16-18 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up.
Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp will be $60 per child, with family discounts available.

A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 22-25 at Mustang Bowl from 7:30-10:30 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.

Sweetwater represented at Cline Shale Consortium meeting

The newly formed "Cline Shale Consortium" had its organizational meeting in San Angelo. The mission statement and committee structure was discussed. The Consortium will be contracting with University of Texas San Antonio to provide an economic impact study for the region. Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda and Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Executive Director Ken Becker represented Sweetwater on the committee (shown). Representatives from Abilene, Colorado City, Snyder, Big Spring and all over the Cline Shale were also in attendance.

Microsoft Excel Basic 2010 course to begin Monday

On Monday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 17, a six-hour Microsoft Excel Basic 2010 course will be held in the mornings at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas.
The course is one of eight classes being taught this summer in the Microsoft Office Short Courses in Room 210 of the Pevehouse Building, located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive. Each course costs $120.

Free Slurpees enjoyed at 7-11

On July 11 each year a certain convenience store chain celebrates 7-Eleven Day. It is also known to customers as Free Slurpee Day. In what’s become an annual event, 7-Eleven stores give away one free Slurpee per customer on July 11. Shown at the 7-Eleven store on Hailey Street in Sweetwater getting a free Slurpee are members of the Maestas Family including Blaine, Blaine, Kimberly and Alexis.

Sweetwater student Hannah Poone is keeping herself busy this summer with a Kool-Aid and lemonade stand in town. She will be a fifth grader at Sweetwater Intermediate School this coming school year.

SEED a part of SWiFT facility Commissioning

As part of President Obama's all-of-the-above energy strategy that develops every available source of American energy, the Department of Energy and Vestas Wind Systems joined with Sandia National Laboratories and Texas Tech University to break ground on a new state-of-the-art wind turbine test facility in Lubbock. The Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) facility is the first public facility of its kind in the world to use multiple wind turbines to measure how wind turbine wakes interact with one another in a wind farm.
