S’water moving on

February 13, 2013

SONORA — Now that the Sweetwater girls are in the Class 3A playoffs, they’ve decided to stay awhile.
The Lady Mustangs on Tuesday guaranteed that their best season since 2005 will continue by grabbing a 58-43 bi-district win over Fort Stockton.
Sweetwater, now 21-14 for the season, will take on Lubbock Cooper in the area playoffs later this week. At press time, the teams had tentatively agreed to play at Post on Friday.
Nothing has come easy for the Lady Mustangs over the past month during their run to the postseason, and Tuesday’s game wasn’t exactly a cakewalk either.

Lady Mustangs’ foe has SW ties

February 12, 2013

You might think that the only local connection the Sweetwater girls’ basketball team has to Fort Stockton — which will be facing the Lady Mustangs in a Class 3A bi-district playoff at 6:30 p.m. today at Sonora — is that the schools were 4A district rivals for many years back in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
But it turns out that the Sweetwater-Fort Stockton connection is much closer, because the Prowlers’ head coach has local ties.
Vic Ivy is now in his third year as head girls coach at Fort Stockton.

However, Sterling City was able to effectively shut down Roscoe’s offense — especially in the final two quarters — enough to pull out a 32-29 victory and end the Plowgirls’ year.
