Several entered pleas during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings this past week.

Rhoades named SIS Teacher of the Year

July 5, 2013

Dana Rhoades was named the Teacher of the Year at Sweetwater Intermediate School (SIS) for the 2012-2013 school year. She is the fourth and fifth grade Special Education - Life Skills teacher.
Rhoades attended Wayland Baptist University and Angelo State University, in which she earned her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood - Grade 4 Generalist, Grades 4 through 8 Generalist, and all-level Special Education.
She is a member and officer of the Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society, as well as the Alpha Chi Honor Society. This past fall, she earned the SIS Bucket Filler award.

Independence Day Celebration today in Roscoe

An Independence Day celebration will take place on Saturday, July 6, in Roscoe with many activities planned.
The day will begin with a parade down Broadway at 10 a.m. with the line-up at 9:30 a.m. Street vendors and food stands will line Cypress, Broadway and Old Town Park, and there will be a kid’s play area with bounce houses and other inflatables.

RCISD’s early start waiver approved by TEA

Roscoe Collegiate Independent School District was eligible to apply for an early start waiver for the 2013-2014 school year to assist in facilitating the Early College High School/STEM Academy. The waiver is applicable for two instructional years and allows the district to start classes two weeks prior to the fourth Monday in August. Fall 2013 classes are set to start August 12 and will conclude May 16, 2014.

Sweetwater criminal defense lawyers honor founding fathers with a reading of Declaration of Independence

Before a crowd of about 25 residents of Sweetwater and Nolan County, including several veterans of our military and State District Judge Glen Harrison, local criminal defense lawyers Trey Keith, Chris Hartman and John Young read the entire Declaration of Independence on the courthouse steps Thursday before the Annual Independence Day parade. County Judge Tim Fambrough introduced the reading with comments about the Declaration and the significance of the document to our Nation.

Fire at Lake Sweetwater

A fire at Lake Sweetwater on Thursday night at about 11:30 p.m. was likely caused by fireworks according to fire authorities.
The fire was said to be within throwing distance of the Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department's station. No damage was cause to any structures as mostly scrub brushed burned in the blaze.

Parkinson's treatment program discussed at Lunch and Learn seminar

The recent Lunch and Learn Seminar at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), held last Thursday, discussed the hospital's recent treatment program offered for those who suffer from Parkinson's disease, a program called LSVT-BIG.
Presented by Cody Paty, a physical therapist at RPMH, the first part of the program offered some background information on the disease.
Each year, anywhere from 50,000 to 60,000 new cases of Parkinson's disease are discovered. It affects one million people in the United States, while 4 to 6 million people worldwide suffer from Parkinson's disease.

Doyle Lee Parsons

Doyle Lee Parsons, age 42, of Blackwell, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013 at Decker Cemetery with Dr. Stan Cosby officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

2013 summer sports camps schedule

A Mustang Golf Camp will be held July 16-18 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up. Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp will be $60 per child, with family discounts available. For more information, call camp instructors Sarah Cumbie at 325-338-5407 or Ashley Timm at 325-338-8055.
A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 22-25 at Mustang Bowl from 7:30-10:30 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9. The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive individual instruc-tion from members of the Mustang coaching staff.
