Graveside services for Carlee Monette Pope, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with her daughter, Pat Duke, and nephew, James Hall, officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Pope died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
She was born June 18, 1926, in Royston, Fisher County, Texas. She married Dan H. Pope in November of 1945, in Roby. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She lived in Sweetwater since 1965 and was a homemaker.
Pauline (Polly) Warton, 91, of Austin, Texas formerly of Sweetwater, Texas passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2012. She was born Feb. 2, 1921, to Presley Paul Cooper and Virginia (Simmons) Cooper in Roby, Texas. Polly had been a resident of Austin, Texas since 2004. She started and funded a Church in Onida, South Dakota and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas, a member of the Eastern Star and Elks Lodge and was heavily involved with the Pastoral Care & Counseling Center in Abilene, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Ben William Warton, Sr. in 1997.
Katie Reve Kalmer, age 24, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Friday, May 18, 2012 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS from cancer. Katie is the daughter of RexAnn George Kalmer formerly of Maryneal. Katie was born April 4, 1988 at Fort Riley, KS.
Area artists Brandon Bohall and Joah Henry teamed up to bring Sweetwater a musical event for Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday night, May 26, a concert was held at the Nolan County Plaza parking lot. This is the first time for the acts to perform in Sweetwater. Performing acts included Sambo Sly, Tony Rainwater and the Spiting Image Band, Shane Henry and the 4 x Band, the Brandon Bohall Band and Joah "Beaver" Henry. Roy Juarez, Jr., motivational speaker, has reached a milestone of working with over 100,000 students on the âMy Bag, My Home: Homeless By Choiceâ Tour. Juarez spoke to students from Sweetwater ISD a couple years ago as part of the tour.
The Tour began as a dream (literally) to inspire students not to give up on life, their dreams, and understand the value of a higher education. In 2010, Juarez set out on his self-funded tour with a mere $100 and a full tank of gas.

The trial against Jerry Dewitt Washington began on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 in the 32nd Judicial District Court. Washington was previously indicted for possession of a controlled substance, namely cocaine, occurring on July 14, 2011.
Jury selection began on Tuesday morning, with the panel dwindling to become the 8-woman, 4-man jury. A pre-trial motion outside of the jury's presence was heard on Tuesday afternoon in an effort for the defense to suppress any evidence found in the trunk of the car Washington was in, but was denied by presiding judge Glen Harrison.
Two issues regarding voting were approved by the Nolan County Commissioners during their meeting held on Tuesday morning, May 29, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Approval was given toward the elimination of five voting precincts for the county. On March 16 of this year, with the county moving into one district following the state's redistricting process, precincts 10 through 14 were removed.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 200 calls for service, issued 21 citations and made eight arrests from May 25-28, 2012.

Arrested by SPD:
The annual WASP Homecoming took place this Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Several events took place during the weekend including a parade to kick off the event, fly-in, free flights for children, a luncheon, meet and greet and dinner and dance.
A highlight of the weekend was the official groundbreaking ceremony for the WASP Museum's three million dollar expansion. The national museum will house their memorabilia and perpetuate their stories.
