Local boutique owners busy after boots featured on American Idol

The owners of Paradise Boutique in Sweetwater, sisters Jacqi Johnson Martinez and Sheretta Johnson are celebrating — and now very busy — after a pair of their custom bling boots recently made their way, and a big impression, on the Fox Television show American Idol.
According to the sisters, they were contacted a few weeks ago by a friend of American Idol contestant Janelle Arthur of Tennessee, wanting a pair of their blinged boots for Arthur to wear on stage.

Beat the Street for Little Feet draws near

The spring season is in full bloom, which means it's the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors!
On Saturday, April 27, Cornerstone Christian School will host "Beat the Street for Little Feet"--a family-fun event that will get everyone active and assist the local school. The function will be held on the school campus, located at the 4th and Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater.

William “Bill” Harris King

ROTAN – William “Bill” Harris King, 72, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at his residence.  Arrangements were made with Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Services will be at a later date.
Bill was born Oct. 27, 1940, to R.L. and Dovie Waldine (White) King at Little Rock, Ark. He lived in Snyder until moving to Rotan in 1980. Bill then moved to Las Vegas, Nev. and then to Sweetwater in 2003. He was a devoted friend and was always willing to help others in any manner. 
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Merrie King and Tammie King; and one sister, Brenda Morris.

Harold Duvall

April 13, 2013

Harold Duvall, age 83, of Roscoe, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Sweetwater.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Roscoe with Reverend Juanelle Jordan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

Johanna DeJong Collins

Johanna DeJong Collins, 96, of Sweetwater, passed away on April 10, 2013.
Jo was born in Springfield, S.D. on Nov. 15, 1916. She graduated from Springfield High School and continued on to receive a teaching degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D. and a Bachelor's degree in education from Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.
A private family memorial service is planned with local arrangements by Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued two citations and made five arrests on April 11, 2013.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Prowler — 900 block of W. Third.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jennifer Adkins, 30 — Warrant/theft.
• Megan Treadway, 20 — Warrant.
• Tommy Serrano, 25 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Jeramiah Dillin, 31 — Public intoxication.
• Justin Coutts, 27 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served one civil paper and made no arrests on April 11, 2013.

Growing up my parents loved to listen to country music. Of course that meant that while we were traveling, we had the privilege of listening too. One song in particular stuck in my head that went like this: “I’ve got a tiger by tail it’s plain to see...” I’m sure many of you remember that song. It’s about a man that went bear hunting, and when he finally caught one, he didn’t know what to do with it.

Upcoming meetings presented in city manager report

The month of May has several events lined up, which were noted by City Manager Eddie Brown during his monthly report at Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
On May 4, a celebration marking 105 years of the Sweetwater Fire Department will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station. Grant Madden, the city's Emergency Services Director, extended an invitation to the commissions and the public for the event.

Highland One Act Play to perform at Area

The Highland One Act Play has advanced to Area competition and will compete at the Area 2 Region II contest Saturday, April 13 at the Naoma Huff Performing Arts Center at Clyde High School.
The Highland cast of students is performing scenes from “All My Sons,” by Arthur Miller, published by Dramatists Play Service.
