Golf tournament to benefit Roscoe athletic department

A golf tournament will be held on Saturday, July 23, at the Lake Sweetwater Golf Course to benefit the Roscoe Collegiate High School Athletic Department.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and tee off will be at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $240 per four-person team. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. Academy gift cards will be awarded to the longest drive and closest to the pin. There will also be a drawing for a $100 Academy gift card. Golf carts are limited and will be rented on a first come, first served basis.

Storybook Theatre at the library

Actors from the New Braunfels Storybook Theatre came to the County-City Library in Sweetwater to perform “Two Pigs and T.H.E. Wolf,” an entertaining and educational twist on “The Three Little Pigs” story. Children and parents attended the 45-minute showing at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 20, 2011. The story of Gracie, Suzie, and Theodore Howl Eater was not only hilarious, but emphasized the benefits of making proper choices in even the most difficult circumstances. The audience was asked to participate and even learned a little sign language.

Gee named SHS Teacher of the Year

Brandie Gee has been given the honor of Teacher of the Year at Sweetwater High School for the 2010-2011 school year, having taught freshmen, seniors and everyone in between as a math teacher at the school. Of the five years she has taught, four have been with Sweetwater ISD.
Gee attended Texas Tech University and Abilene Christian University. She received a degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies, and most recently, earned a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction this past April. In addition, she has also been a recipient of the KTXS Teacher Tribute Award.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had ten calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on July 19, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Nathan Shawn Rose, 19, of Snyder — Warrant/harassment.
• Robert Scott Plemons, 27, of Sweetwater — Warrant/theft.

Calls for service:
• MHMR transport — E. Arizona.

Future Mustangs, Plowboys at camp

Sweetwater and Roscoe have been holding football camps this week for youngsters in the area as the 2011 high school season nears. Pictured is one of the many individuals who took part in the camps, which wrapped up on Wednesday.

Carlos Rico indicted

July 20, 2011

Carlos Rico, who allegedly tried to strangle his four-year-old son, Angel Flores and left him on Interstate 20 covered in cactus spines, was indicted on three charges by a Nolan County Grand Jury on Tuesday. Rico was indicted for attempted capital murder, injury to a child and endangering a child. The attempted capital murder charge is a first degree felony and possible punishment includes 5-99 years or life in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

Trinity Baptist begins Blitz Week

Volunteers from Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater and First Baptist Church in Stamford came together for the second Blitz Week to remodel the lower floor of the education building at Trinity Baptist Church. Members from both churches are pictured carrying sheet rock and insulation into the building. Walls, carpets and electrical wiring are among the many things being replaced and upgraded at the church.

Six enter guilty pleas

Six people entered guilty pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Tuesday.
Mercedes Lopez Randolph pled guilty to injury to a disabled individual, a state jail felony. Randolph was sentenced to four years of community supervision. She is also responsible for paying a $1,000 fine, $309 in court costs and $500 in court-appointed attorney's fees. She will also have to serve 120 hours of community service.

Cancer support group offered by Cancer Services Network

July 20, 2011

Cancer Services Network will offer a six-week educational support group for those interested in learning to live beyond a diagnosis of cancer. Sessions are set for 5:30-7 p.m. Thursdays beginning Aug. 18, 2011, at the Hinds Square Classroom located at 100 Chestnut, Suite 112. Cancer Services Network is an agency of the Nolan County United Way.
