Elected officials sworn into office

January 2, 2013

Seven elected officials were sworn into office on Wednesday morning, January 2, at the Nolan County Courthouse.
They were (from left to right) Nolan County Precinct 1 Commissioner Terry Willman, Nolan County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tommy White, Nolan County Attorney Lisa Peterson, District Attorney Ann Reed, Nolan County Tax Collector Kathy Bowen, Nolan County Sheriff David Warren and Nolan County Constable Will Lenoir.
The oath of office was administered by 32nd Judicial District Judge Glen Harrison (far left).

SNCHD stresses importance of parental involvement

As children become teenagers, parents may feel they no longer have much influence on their teen’s decision making, especially when it comes to details like dating, abstinence, sex and birth control.
The good news is parents count. Recent research shows that when parents communicate their attitudes and values about teen sexuality to their children, their teenagers are less likely to have sexual relations at an early age.

FFB keeps New Year tradition

First Financial Bank has kept up a yearly tradition of handing out cans of black-eyed peas to customers in the drive through and inside the bank on New Year’s Eve.

Mary Imogene Mathews Jones

January 2, 2013

Denison — Mary Imogene Mathews Jones, age 87, passed from this life Monday, Dec. 31, 2012.
Mrs. Jones was born March 3, 1925, in Nolan County, Sweetwater, Texas the daughter of Roy Ellis and Mary Alpha (Gray) Mathews.

Pictured here from left are Zach Welch, David Welch, Jake Welch and Michael Welch at Prestonwood Stadium in Plano where Jake’s football team, the Chargers, recently won the sixth grade championship while being coached by Michael, his father and a former Sweeetwater High School and Baylor University star athlete.
Zach was the quarterback for his Shadowridge team that finished as the eighth grade runnerup in the Lewisville ISD.
David and his wife Judy, not pictured, still live in Sweetwater and are the parents of Michael Welch and the grandparents of Zach and Jake Welch.

Robert Callan Gabel

Funeral services for Robert Callan Gabel, 80, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Rev. Chris Stephens will officiate and interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-2 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Gabel died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, in Coleman, Texas.

Schlotzsky’s Deli to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Schlotzsky's Deli, located at 204 S.E. Georgia Ave.
Schlotzsky's Deli is owned and operated by Steve and Laurie Holcomb, with Cathy Peace as manager and Ronnie Young as assistant manager, along with 20 employees.
Schlotzsky's Deli offers a variety of products, including Cinnabon cinnamon rolls, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, sandwiches on fresh baked bread, pizzas, salads and soups.

Youth New Year’s Eve bash tonight

A local church youth group is offering middle school and high school students a new opportunity to ring in the New Year in a safe and fun setting.
The Salvage Yard is the sixth through twelfth grade student ministry at Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Sweetwater. The group will be sponsoring the "AllThingsNew - New Year's Eve Bash" on Monday, December 31 at the church, located at 1418 Hailey.
Doors to the event will open at 8 p.m. and there will be a $10 entry fee with food and drinks available. Each person will also be entered for chances to win door prizes, including $100 in cash.
