MLK holiday commemorated

January 21, 2013

Monday will mark the twenty-seventh observation of a holiday honoring a man who took steps to make a positive imprint in society while doing so in a calm and non-violent manner.
Martin Luther King, Jr.--also known more succinctly as MLK--was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to a pastor and school teacher and was the middle child of three. Considered a gifted student, King attended a segregated public school, only to follow in the footsteps of his father and headed to Morehouse College as a fifteen-year-old.

Healthy living begins with commitments made today

January 21, 2013

As we are well into January, many people who have set new goals and resolutions for the New Year have already broken one or many of them. If you have put off making health and exercise changes to your lifestyle for 2013, it is never too late to recommit.
“Each year, three of the top five resolutions made by American adults consist of health- and exercise-related goals,” said Wes Stafford, director of the cardiac rehabilitation program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH). “People understand the need, but often fall short of motivation.”

Bulldogs humble ‘Stangs

January 19, 2013

ABILENE — A convincing Sweetwater victory at Snyder on Tuesday, coupled with Wylie’s surprisingly-narrow win at Greenwood, gave the Mustangs hope they could put up a tough fight here Friday.
But the No. 5 Bulldogs had other ideas.
While Sweetwater jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Wylie was relentless after gaining the upper hand as it rolled to a 76-25 win.

Lady Bulldogs turn away SW girls with big 2nd half

January 19, 2013

ABILENE — For a half, the Sweetwater girls were competitive against No. 18-ranked Wylie on Friday on the Lady Bulldogs’ home floor, trailing by just seven (26-19) as they went to the dressing room.
At that point, the Lady Mustangs’ dream of pulling into a first-place tie with Wylie — which actually led by just four points, 23-19, until hitting a 3-pointer just before halftime — in District 4-3A seemed possible.
