The annual Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant is a time where young ladies from throughout the Big Country come together to compete for scholarship money. At last year's pageant, the theme for the night was Wings Across America in honor of the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots).
The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The pageant is open to all girls between the ages of 16-19 who live within a 75 mile radius of Sweetwater.
The Highland girls basketball team posed with its trophy on Tuesday after beating Water Valley, 40-32, in a Class 1A, Division II regional quarterfinal playoff game in Ballinger.
The win sends the Lady Hornets into the regional semifinals where they will play Baird at 7 p.m. Friday in Abilene.
The Highland boys lost their bi-district game to Robert Lee, 37-22, in Ballinger in the second half of Tuesdayâs doubleheader.

The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees approved an increase to the student travel meal allowance during their meeting held on Monday night at the Administration Building.
With the current prices standing at $5 for a day trip and $6 per meal on an overnight trip, the district's meal allowance can barely keep up with the rising costs to pay for a standard meal. Thus, a dollar increase to both prices was proposed.
While in its early stages, preliminary concept plans for a new Police Station were presented during the February meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission by Police Chief Brian Frieda.
As a result of available capital improvement funds, it was announced at the December 2012 meeting that a contract was signed by the city with Wiginton Hooker Jeffry Architects, P.C. for work to be done on a police station. Since that time, the architects have constructed a concept plan for the city.
Mary Etta OâDonald, 94, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Hendrick Medical Center.Â Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Roby Church of Christ with Darrell âSpeedyâ Hart officiating.Â Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, directed by Abilene Funeral Home.Â Viewing will be Thursday from noon until service time at the church in Roby.
Mrs. OâDonald was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Fisher County, Texas to the late Watson Mann and Martha Cary McCain.Â She was a member of the Roby Church of Christ.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on Feb. 18, 2013.

BALLINGER â They may not be state-ranked, but the Highland girls basketball team knows how to take down a top-25 opponent.
When the Lady Hornets got in foul trouble in the second half while trying to protect a lead, they relied on two Ds â defense and a very effective delay game â and clutch free throw shooting to secure a 40-32 victory over No. 16-ranked Water Valley on Tuesday at Ballinger High School.
Highland (29-4) will face Baird in the regional semifinals at Abilene Christian University at 7 p.m. Friday â a team the Lady Hornets defeated 43-28 back in late November.
BALLINGER â The Highland boys relied largely on their defense to get them into the Class A playoffs this season. It wasnât enough, however, to overcome an anemic offensive effort in Fridayâs bi-district game vs. Robert Lee as the Steers built a first-half lead and held on for a 37-22 victory at Ballinger High School.
District 13-A, D-II runnerup Highland (15-15) held only one lead, 4-3, in the first minute of the second quarter. Yes, 4-3.
