The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 69 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made one arrest on April 8, 2013.

The SPD received 39, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 600 block of James.
• Prowler — 500 block of Wall.
• Prowler — 900 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 900 block of Lamar.
• Stalking — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of a building — 1100 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Ashley Diggs, 29 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served four civil papers and made one arrest on April 8, 2013.

The warm weather has gone, leaving us with mostly sunny skies and a high near 52 today. Winds will be from the north at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Taste of Sweetwater raises money for Meals on Wheels

The community of Sweetwater once again stepped to the plate to help those in need. The Nolan County Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), held the 27th Annual Taste of Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum annex building.
Twenty-five local food establishments participated in this year’s event, with all types of food represented. According to SNAP director, Tonya Challis, the crowd numbered at about 400 and helped to raise about $4,918 for the non-profit organization, which included $1,142 raised from the quilt drawing. The quilt was made by SNAP participant Patsy Frith.

Roscoe welcomes Burritos Zacatecas

The City of Roscoe recently welcomed Burritos Zacatecas to town with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Many members of the community showed their support at the event.

April declared as Child Abuse Prevention Month

The month of April has been declared as Child Abuse Prevention Month, following action by the Nolan County Commissioners during their meeting on Monday morning.
The commissioners approved the proclamation for the county, after reviewing the document prior to the meeting. Activities sponsored by the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center and Sky High Children's Ranch are lined up today and tomorrow to bring awareness to child abuse within the county along with measures to prevent the crime.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 158 calls for service, issued ten citations and made nine arrests from April 5-7, 2013.

The SPD received 77, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of E. Broadway.
• 900 block of E. 12th.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 800 block of Coke.
• Criminal mischief — 1100 block of Josephine.
• Burglary of a building — 900 block of E. 12th.
• Theft — 1600 block of Bell.
• Harassment — 1100 block of Crane.

Arrested by SPD:
• Female juvenile, 16 — Family violence assault.
• Carlos Martinez, 23 — Warrants.
• Audrey Gutierrez, 22 — Warrants.

District golf medalist contenders

Mason Andrews (shown) is in 10th place among medalists, while Michael Hunt is 11th for Sweeetwater at the District 4-3A boys golf tournament that ends today at Monahans.

SHS teams resume playoff chase at Greenwood

Halfway to the playoffs.
If the season ended today, Sweetwater High School’s baseball and softball teams would be in the postseason.
But they’re not there yet.
However, the SHS base-ball team is tied for first place at the midpoint of dis-trict and can get even closer to a playoff berth today if the Mustangs (4-1 in district) win at Greenwood (1-4) today. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Sweetwater netters have four wins at 4-3A tourney

Sweetwater had a total of four match wins Friday at the District 4-3A tennis tournament that was held at Big Spring.
First-round winners were Isaiah Hernandez in boys singles, Bax-Vause in boys doubles and Jenny Medellin and Kristen Casto in girls doubles before they lost in the second round.
Hernandez defeated a Snyder player 7-5, 6-3 while Bax and Vause won 6-1, 6-2 over Greenwood. Medellin won 3-6, 6-2 (10-8) vs. Snyder, and Casto won 6-1, 6-0 vs. Monahans.

Tonight before 11 p.m., we should see a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, and some of them could be sever. Expect partly cloudy skies with a low around 43 and northwestern winds at 5 to 10 mph. In the evening, winds will shift to the north at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts topping out at 30 mph.
