SHS offers real time “live” dual credit college courses

The Dual Credit Program at Sweetwater High School has been around for many years. In fact, SHS was one of the very first high schools in West Texas to partner with a college. The original partnership was with Texas State Technical College right here in Sweetwater. Many students took advantage of this program for many years and continue to do so now with the partnership of Western Texas College. WTC accredits the academic core courses, while TSTC continues its support by sponsoring specialty technology courses.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Sept. 5, 2012.

The SPD received 34, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 900 block of Elm.
• Assault — 400 block of E. 15th.
• Criminal mischief — 100 block of Beryle.
• Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — 1600 block of Grand.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Sept. 5, 2012.

Betty Ruth Bruner, born July 18, 1927 in Roby, Texas to JT and Eula Feagan of Roby, died Sept. 1, 2012, at age 85. 

Thelma Lee Johns

September 7, 2012

Funeral services for Thelma Lee Johns, 78, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Thelma died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.

Wayne Walton

Wayne Walton, age 84, of Hurst, Texas (Former resident of Sweetwater, Texas), passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 at Bishop Davies Nursing Center in Hurst, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Mike Sells and Chad Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Blackwell tries for 2-0 start

Following its 54-6 home victory over Westbrook in its Six-Man opener last week, Blackwell will stay at Hornet Stadium to host Jayton as it tries for a 2-0 start at 7:30 tonight.
Jayton figures to be a tougher opponent for Blackwell after defeating Lueders-Avoca 48-0 in its opener. The Hornets, who are coming off their first on-field win in nearly two years, are ranked as a one-point underdog against the Jaybirds but should be con-fident after last week’s win.

Weekend weather for Sweetwater

The weekend weather will be cooling off considerably, but not before a hot Friday forecast. Today will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 103. Winds will be from the south at 15 to 20 mph, decreasing to 10 to 15 mph in the morning. Gusts could be as high as 25 mph.
Tonight, a 20% chance of precipitation comes in with along with a cold front. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 62 and breezy. A north-northeast wind at 10 to 15 mph will increase to 20 to 25 mph in the evening, with gusts as high as 35 mph.

New organization begins in Nolan County

Three officers from the Brown County Republican Women's Club of Brownwood, Texas were recently in Sweetwater to meet with a group of women in Nolan County who are interested in forming a Nolan County Republican Women's Club.
Introductions were made and general discussion followed about the direction our country is headed and concern was expressed that perhaps the Republican women in Nolan County have not done enough to help change this.

Shooting at Apple Creek

Around 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, the Sweetwater Police Department received a call about shots fired at Apple Creek Apartments on Hoyt Street in Sweetwater, according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda.

Kiwanis helps raise over $3K for children

During the local Kiwanis Club meeting held on Wednesday, September 5 at Bee's Lunch Bucket, the group discussed their most recent project while looking ahead to their most popular fundraiser.
At the 2012 Sammy Baugh Classic held at Mustang Bowl, the Kiwanis Club joined forces with Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District), the Sammy Baugh Classic Organizing Committee--a branch of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and the Children's Miracle Network, in order to raise money for children receiving medical care at Hendrick Medical Center's new Children's Hospital.
