Sarona “Tootsie” Roberds, age 83 of Dallas, TX, passed away June 21, 2011. She was born May 5, 1928, in Waxahachie, TX, to G.W. Jr. and Jewel (Hazard) Whitaker. Tootsie grew up in Sweetwater, TX, where her family owned the local bakery. She spent her summers in Red Oak, TX, with her cousins, aunts and uncles. Tootsie graduated from SMU in 1948 and was employed with the Dallas ISD. She enjoyed traveling, reading and visiting beautiful gardens. Tootsie was a member of Casa View Baptist Church.
The 2011 Sweetwater Volleyball Summer League will be held Tuesday nights this summer and will begin Tuesday, June 28. It will be held mainly at the Sweetwater High School new and old gyms. League age groups will be for the 2011-12 school year and are as follows: grades 7-8, ninth/JV and varsity. Also, a tournament will be held Tuesday, July 19 at the same locations. This is an opportunity for all volleyball players to get some additional volleyball experience. The entry fee will be $25 per player, and all checks should be made out to Sweetwater Summer Volleyball.

Currently, the Texas Forest Service is assisting local crews put out a handful of fires: two of the more noticeable are in Nolan County near Maryneal and Taylor County near Trent.
The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, June 20, 2011 at the Administration Building.
On the consent agenda, the board approved the minutes from the meeting held on May 16, the financial statements and bills from the previous month and the investment statement. Approval was also given to accept one of the three delinquent tax lot bids received by the board; the other two were denied as they did not meet the minimum requirement.
Morgan Real Estate recently welcomed a new realtor to their company, Amanda Morrow, who moved to Sweetwater with her family about two and a half years ago, after being born and raised in Big Spring.
Morrow has had an interest in real estate for over six years, even during the time she was a stay-at-home mother. Morrow finished her final real estate course in March of 2011, through on line courses at Texas A&M University.
Morrow loves residing in Sweetwater, and enjoys raising her family here.
Wanda Straley, 65, of Sweetwater, passed away at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Kevin Shipp and Richard Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in the Loraine Cemetery beside her husband, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
There will be a family visitation Sunday evening, June 26, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Grace Willoughby Henson, age 90 of Sweetwater, Texas went to see the Lord, Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Grace was born to the late James L. and Laura G. Willoughby, on April 9, 1921 in Roswell, New Mexico.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church, with Rev. Chris Stephens and Rev. James Baker officiating. Graveside rites will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater is in charge of arrangements.
Sweetwater — Elizabeth Fay Ballard, 83, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, in a local nursing center. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 24t, at the Trent Cemetery with Reverend Ronnie Freeman officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on June 21, 2011.
The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

RETRACTION
A retraction has been issued by the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) for the Wednesday, June 15, 2011 arrest of Jose Salamanca Solis, 34, of Roscoe for driving while intoxicated.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on June 21, 2011.

The Sweetwater 10-under all-star softball team recently competed in a Texas ASA State C tournament at Wichita Falls and went undefeated as it brought home the state championship.
