Request for rail line crossing heard at county meeting

During the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday, discussion was held which stemmed from a request by a business in the oil/gas transportation industry to re-establish a rail line--which crosses County Road (CR) 108--and put it back into service.
Ken Tootle with MAALT made the presentation to the commissioners, in which he gave an overview of the company. The Fort-Worth based company has been in the business for around a decade, boasting 400 employees and several branches in Texas and Oklahoma, among others.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

SW-Pecos playoff is being moved

April 24, 2013

At press time, the Class 3A softball playoff between Sweetwater and Pecos on Saturday was in the process of being moved to another location in Lubbock. If the change is made today, it will be announced on the Sweet-water Reporter web site.

These eight Highland girls will all be competing this Friday and Saturday at the Region II-A, Division II track meet at Angelo State University.

Health Department celebrates NIIW

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This year’s NIIW is April 20-27. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.

County burn ban reinstated

Though short-lived, the burn ban for Nolan County was reinstated during the county commissioners meeting held on Monday at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough had ordered the lifting of the ban on Friday, April 12, although its reinstatement was listed on Monday's agenda. However, in a statement released after the meeting on Monday afternoon, the emergency burn ban and fireworks ban will remain in effect for 90 days unless significant rainfall is received.

SMS Robotics teams receive award

On Saturday, the Sweetwater Middle School Robotics Program took five teams to compete in the GEAR Robotics Competition at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The competition officially began on March 23, when the theme of the competition was revealed. This year's theme was Dr. Roboto. It focused on how robots are used in the medical field.
To compete, each team designed a robot, programmed it to complete simulated medical missions and write an engineering essay explaining how they approached the challenge. Each team also came up with a team name and t-shirt design for the competition.
