Roscoe, Highland girls are area’s only basketball winners

The Highland and Roscoe girls were the only win-ners among the six Nolan County high school basket-ball teams on Tuesday.
The Lady Hornets are now 13-3 after defeating Guthrie 50-30, while Roscoe (9-5) beat TLCA 55-21.
Sierra Allen led Highland with 17 points while Han-nah Allen also reached double figures with 13 points. Sydny Helbert and Schyler Kimbrell each contributed six points while Madison Moseley and Beth Richburg had four.
Roscoe held a 20-0 lead over San Angelo-based TLCA after the first quarter of play, and continued its dominance over the last three periods as well.

TSTC West Texas graduates 166 in Fall 2012 ceremony

(Abilene) – On Friday evening, 166 graduates will walk across the stage, most already placed in the Texas workforce, supporting our local and state economies. 
The ceremony will take place on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Abilene Civic Center at 7:00 p.m.

Graduate details: 
166 Total graduates, 96 graduating with Associates of Applied Science Degrees, 70 graduating with Certificate of Completion, 28 Marketable Skills Achievement Awards (Dual Credit Students from Breckenridge and Roscoe High Schools)

Sweetwater Intermediate School is proud to recognize Dana Rhoades as the recipient of the 2nd Six Weeks 'Bucket Filler' Award.
Dana's work and commitment touch all levels of campus and student life at SIS. Her classroom leadership is greatly valued and truly appreciated.

Three dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a female mixed breed dog, a male terrier mix and a male mixed breed dog. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued one citation and made five arrests on Dec. 10, 2012.

The SPD received 15, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Sexual assault of a child — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of habitation — 1600 block of E 12th.
• Burglary of building — 700 block of E Third.
• Unauthorized use of a vehicle — 2600 block of E Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Matthew Williams, 24 — Failure to register as sex offender.
• Male juvenile, 16 — Aggravated assault with deadly weapon.
• Raven Vera, 26 — Warrants.

Nello Ruth Collier

Nello Ruth Collier, 92, of Odessa passed away Monday at Parks Methodist Retirement Home. She was born October 1, 1920 in Foss, Oklahoma to Carl and Mattie Morgan Thorp. She united in marriage to the love of her life, David Clayton Collier, on September 7, 1940 in Loraine Texas and was reunited with him December 9, 2012. She was a Christian woman who loved the Lord Dearly and a loving homemaker, who enjoyed cooking and having all her Grandchildren at her side. Mother’s hobbies were crochet, gardening, and traveling, looking for windmills and bluebonnets.

Sweetwater gets sweep in d-header with Brownwood

After spending quite a bit of time on the road lately, Sweetwater High School’s two varsity basketball teams finally got a chance to play in front of their home crowd on Tuesday.
The result was a crowd-pleasing sweep of the teams’ doubleheader at Mustang Gym against former district rival Brownwood.
The Sweetwater girls got the ball rolling, so to speak, as they began the double-header with a 53-38 win over Brownwood for their 10th victory of the season.
Then the boys completed the sweep by overcoming a one-point deficit in the final two minutes to knock off Brownwood, 63-60.

Restroom capacity doubles at Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium

Although the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium is over 80 years old, it continues to be a viable part of the community, serving as the location of the Miss Snakecharmer pageant and Municipal Band Christmas concert every year, as well as a venue for a variety of musicians and performers and community events. In fact, the building’s age brings a lot of character and beauty to it that it wouldn’t have otherwise.
