The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on April 2, 2013.

The SPD received 28, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Harassment — 600 block of Sam Houston.
• Prowler — 1000 block of Locust.
• Prowler — 200 block of W. Texas.
• Criminal mischief — 1600 block of Grand.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 13 — Injury to a child.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served five civil papers and made one arrest on April 2, 2013.

Junior varsity softball team

April 4, 2013

Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity softball team, pictured here, returns to action at approximately 7 p.m. Friday.
The team will play at Snyder immediately after the varsity game at 5 p.m., with both games to be played at Snyder. The varsity baseball team will also play at Snyder on Friday, with the contest set to begin at 7 p.m., while the JV baseball team hosts Snyder at noon Saturday.

It’s fresh pea season! Enjoy making a minted pea soup

This recipe can be prepared in 45 minutes or less but may require additional sitting time.
Even though it might seem odd to use frozen peas during fresh pea season, they are infinitely easier to deal with than fresh peas in the pod — particularly when making a quick dish such as this soup whizzed up in a blender.
Yield: Makes about 8 cups
Ingredients
1 small onion
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 pounds frozen peas
5 cups chicken stock or low-salt broth
1 cup packed fresh mint leaves
1 cup heavy cream (or ‚ cup heavy cream mixed with 1/2 cup plain yogurt)

NCF golf scramble to benefit local high school students

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board are pleased to announce their annual Golf Classic for Scholarships for Nolan County high school graduates has set a goal of raising $33,000 from its April 20, 2013 golf scramble. This event is scheduled for a 9 a.m. tee time at the Sweetwater Country Club.
In reaching this goal, the NCF will have awarded 200 scholarships of $1,000 each for Nolan County high school graduates to start their college careers at any Texas college or university. This year's golf scramble will be the ninth consecutive year for this worthwhile event.

Family FunFair to highlight child abuse awareness, family time

High Sky Children’s Ranch and the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center have once again partnered to host the Eighth Annual West Texas Child Abuse Awareness Family FunFair in Sweetwater. The FunFair will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex on Wednesday, April 10, from 4-6:30 p.m. The Time of Remembrance will start at 6 p.m. and organizers ask that everybody stay for the ceremony honoring children who have been victims of child abuse.

Woman’s Forum donates to Pioneer Museum

The Woman's Forum presented a $1,000 donation to the Pioneer Museum's board member Mike Fernandez, Museum Connoisseur Betty Turner and Museum Curator Melonnie Hicks.

Local teachers selected to participate in workshop

Two local teachers were recently selected to participate in a one-day teacher workshop in Abilene sponsored by Humanities Texas.
Jeffrey Shelton, who teaches U.S. and world history at Highland Junior and Senior High School and Leanna West, who teaches social studies and health science at Trent School, attended the workshop, which offered teachers the opportunity to work closely with leading scholars, studying major aspects of nineteenth-century U.S. history, such as slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction.

NCF donates to Municipal Auditorium

Homer Taylor (left), President/Executive director for the Nolan County Foundation, recently presented Richard Smola, President of the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium Board of Directors, $2,000 as part of a challenge grant to assist the auditorium board in purchasing a new grand piano.
The piano was purchased earlier this year and was part of the show for the Kristine Mirelle concert, as well as the Miss Snake Charmer pageant.
“The piano will be a great asset for upcoming presentations,” stated Smola.
