The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold a special volunteer coffee event at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, at the Pioneer Museum. Those that have volunteered for anything involving the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce in the past year are invited to enjoy the event. The Pioneer Museum will be the host for the special coffee, but this coffee is not only for chamber members, but for chamber volunteers. The Chamber will furnish the food for the event and Terry Locklar will be preparing homemade burritos cooked on the spot outside of the Pioneer Museum. The Pioneer Museum is located at 610 E.
The Aim for Success Abstinence Education Program will be presented to all 6th-12th graders due to generous contributions from the community. All parents and community members are welcome to attend the parent meeting Wednesday night, May 11, but the parents of 6th-12th graders are strongly encouraged to attend. The parent meeting Wednesday night is prior to the student programs on Thursday, May 12. Note that the parent meeting will be held at the middle school but all the student programs will be at high school.Â

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 170 calls for service, issued one citation and made 16 arrests from April 29 through May 1, 2011.
The SPD received 103, 911 calls.

A graveside service for Kenneth Crow, 77, of Roscoe, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Jason Olton and Ted Posey officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Crow died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Midland.
ROTAN- Janice “Jan” Earle Thornton, passed away Monday May 2, 2011 at Hendrick Hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday May 4, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church of Rotan with Bro. Ward Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
ABILENE — Roscoe’s Caden Smith will be going to the Class 1A state track and field meet in Austin in the discus and shot put for the third consecutive year after winning both events in Region II-A competition Monday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Osama bin Laden, the face of global terrorism and architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, was killed in a firefight with elite American forces Monday, then quickly buried at sea in a stunning finale to a furtive decade on the run.
Long believed to be hiding in caves, bin Laden was tracked down in a costly, custom-built hideout not far from a Pakistani military academy.
Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. It was nearly ten years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory.
Several Nolan County high school athletes will compete in regional track meets starting today.
Sweetwater has eight girls and one boy competing in the Region I-3A Track and Field Championships at Texas Tech University’s Fuller Track in Lubbock. Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell have athletes at the Region II-A meet, which is being held at Abilene Christian University. The top two in each event advance to the state meet in Austin on May 13-14.
