The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 39 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on Sept. 11, 2012.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 400 block of Hailey.
• 1100 block of Oak.

Calls for service:
• Harboring runaway — 1100 block of Oak.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jose Cruz, 24 — Warrants.
• Charlene Carrington, 51 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Sept. 11, 2012.

City prepares for new fiscal year

A variety of action items were presented and approved for the new fiscal year during the Sweetwater City Commission meeting held on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2012 at City Hall.
The two proposals for the self-insured group health, dental and life insurance employee benefit for the 2012-2013 fiscal year were considered. Tommy Morris and Nancy Johnson were at the meeting to present their comparison findings to the commission and made the recommendation to award the bid to Blue Cross, the city's current insurance provider, which was approved.

Mattie E. "Sue" Henley

Mattie E. "Sue" Henley, age 69, of Sweetwater, went to be with Jesus on Sept. 12, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Reverend Wayne Kirk officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories.

Mustangs start out road swing with trip to B’ridge

Sweetwater was on the verge of starting out 2-0 for the first time since 2006 — as well as overcoming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit against Andrews.
Instead, it came up one yard short of the winning touchdown with nine seconds left in a 20-16 loss.

SEED approves proposal for incoming company

An incentive proposal for Select Energy Services was approved during the meeting of the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors on Monday morning, September 10, 2012.
A presentation was given by Allen Espinoza with Merit Advisors, a site selector for Select Energy Services.
As the company has been seeking for a place to locate, Espinoza noted that Sweetwater's placement to Interstate 20 proves to be very beneficial for transportation. The geographic location of the town was also noted as great in order to service clients.

Adopt-A-Mustang/Mustang Cheerleader begins

It is once again time to sign up for Adopt-A-Mustang/Mustang Cheerleader. Fans have the opportunity to adopt a varsity football player or varsity cheerleader. The cost of the program is $25 and there is no age limit to adopt. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents — anyone can adopt a Mustang. Fans will receive a picture button of their favorite football player/cheerleader and an Adopt-a-Mustang t-shirt. Students wearing their button and t-shirt will be allowed to sit in the Mustang Corral at the District Game Pep Rallies.

Leadership Sweetwater begins year

The Leadership Sweetwater class of 2012-2013 gathered for their first day on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at the Texas State Technical College Center.

Flu vaccine available locally

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department will be administering flu vaccine on Thursday, Sept. 13, and Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays, thereafter. The cost is $20 for all adults; Medicare Part B is accepted. The cost is $6 for children (six months to 18 years) with no insurance. Medicaid and CHIPS are accepted. If children have private insurance, the health department has to refer them to their physician unless insurance does not pay for vaccine.

Outgoing SEED board member honored at meeting

Outgoing SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board member and chairman Kyle Lawrence was honored for his eight years of service during their board meeting on Monday morning, September 12.
A plaque of appreciation was presented to Lawrence by fellow board member Arthur Maberry. Lawrence remarked that he was proud to serve on such a rewarding committee and also praised the SEED staff.
While on the board, Lawrence also shared that one of their best accomplishments was hiring Executive Director Ken Becker, who has continually worked to promote the community.
