For the first time since coming to Sweetwater in 1990, your humble sports editor had no football team from Nolan County to cover in the high school playoffs this past season. In fact, there were few victories to write about as the county’s four schools won just one-fifth of their games (8-32) — and one of those was the result of a forfeit.
But there have been eight victories this season already and Sweetwater (2-3) is the only area team that hasn’t already reached or exceeded its win total for last year.
Members of this year’s Sweetwater High School varsity tennis team are, front row kneeling from left, Kristen Casto, Vida Gamez, Kayla Sage, Teresa Perez-Poe, Brianna Hicks, Jenny Medellin, Gewel Cherry; standing, Keygan Valdez, Michael Redondo, Stephen Shipp, Zac Bax, Isaiah Hernandez, Bryan Vause and Billy Reeves.
ABILENE — Sweetwater’s volleyball team lost to No. 1-ranked Wylie in three games by scores of 17-25, 11-17, 17-25 in the teams’ District 4-3A match on Tuesday.
Sweetwater fell to 21-13 overall, 1-3 in district. Wylie is 31-4 and 4-0. Sweetwater goes to Midland Greenwood (17-17, 1-3) for its next match Friday.
In Sweetwater’s match against Wylie, Kendra Cros-son had eight kills and 10 digs; Kathleen Campbell had six kills; Kelsi Crosson had five kills and 12 digs; Suede Shirley finished with 23 kill assists and four digs; and Shelby Cason had four kills as well as three digs.

The Region 14 Education Service Center (who gets the grant for Headstart) recently bought four iPads per Headstart classroom at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center.Â
Lenior Peterson was the Region 14 representative who made this happen for Sweetwater. There are six Headstart classrooms in all in Sweetwater so there are 24 new iPads for Headstart students to learn on at the school.
Shown are students in Mrs. Susie Kamer's Headstart class in centers using the iPads.
