A new beginning

Hoyt House Assisted Living celebrated a new beginning for the staff and community by hosting an open house designed as a special opportunity to bring residents, families, employees, volunteers and the surrounding communities together to enjoy the celebration. The event took place on Thursday, beginning with a ribbon cutting.
Attendees of Hoyt House’s new beginnings’ celebration were able to tour the assisted living residence and meet the staff members. Refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment was provided.

Scott and Carla Lambert of Sweetwater had lunch with Cody Canada at Schlotzsky’s in Sweetwater on Thursday, as he was headed to Lubbock to Blue Light. The Lamberts say he is a "nice guy."
Canada was born in Pampa, Texas in 1976.

Sweetwater gas prices higher than state average

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in Texas is now $3.24, which is eight cents more than one week ago, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. Drivers in the Lone Star State are paying an average of 18 cents less than the national average which is now $3.42. People in Dallas are paying the most on average at $3.30, and people in El Paso are paying the least at $2.99. Sweetwater drivers are currently paying $3.29 per gallon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 38 calls for service, issued two citations and made no arrests on Jan. 30, 2013.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 500 block of E. Avenue A.
• Credit card abuse — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of a building — 300 block of Pine.
• Sexual assault — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of a habitation — 200 block of Bell.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Jan. 30, 2013.

James Edward Reich

February 1, 2013

James Edward Reich, 54, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. James, better known as Jim, was born April 17, 1958 in Sweetwater. He was a 1976 graduate of Sweetwater High School and attended Angelo State University, graduating in 1980. He was employed by Bob Parr at the former Trend Furniture. After working for Knox Supply Company a short time, he moved to Orlando, Fla. to work for the La Z Boy Corporation. During his 19 years with La Z Boy, the franchise grew to five stores with Jim managing the warehousing, deliveries and claims departments.

Playoffs could be on the line in the opener of today’s Sweetwater vs. Snyder doubleheader at Mustang Gym, at least for the home team. Pride will be the primary motivation in the nightcap.
Sweetwater’s girls face a must win against Snyder if they are to make it to the postseason.
The Lady Mustangs and Big Spring are tied for third place in the District 4-3A standings as both are 4-4 with two games remaining, and the teams have split in their two meetings, with each winning on the road.

JV girls hoping for a bounce-back today

Sweetwater’s JV girls basketball team will be trying to get back on track today against Snyder after the team suffered its first defeat of the season Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s 43-30 loss at Monahans came after the team had run off 21 straight wins this season.
Cierra Knox led Sweetwa-ter (7-1 in district play) on Tuesday by scoring 11 points while Abby McPherson had nine, Maddie Jones four, Jaya Atkins three, Lexi Castillo two and Bianca Castillo one. The freshman girls (4-4, 11-8) lost 31-15 as Alaina Andrews had five, Abby Garcia and Payton Moore four and Morgan Rudel two.
