Leadership Sweetwater begins year

The Leadership Sweetwater class of 2012-2013 gathered for their first day on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at the Texas State Technical College Center.

Flu vaccine available locally

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department will be administering flu vaccine on Thursday, Sept. 13, and Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays, thereafter. The cost is $20 for all adults; Medicare Part B is accepted. The cost is $6 for children (six months to 18 years) with no insurance. Medicaid and CHIPS are accepted. If children have private insurance, the health department has to refer them to their physician unless insurance does not pay for vaccine.

Outgoing SEED board member honored at meeting

Outgoing SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board member and chairman Kyle Lawrence was honored for his eight years of service during their board meeting on Monday morning, September 12.
A plaque of appreciation was presented to Lawrence by fellow board member Arthur Maberry. Lawrence remarked that he was proud to serve on such a rewarding committee and also praised the SEED staff.
While on the board, Lawrence also shared that one of their best accomplishments was hiring Executive Director Ken Becker, who has continually worked to promote the community.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Sept. 10, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Runaway — 400 block of Pine.

Arrested by SPD:
• Christopher Blackburn, 31 — Warrant.
• Freddie Peace, 46 — Family violence assault and public intoxication.
• Taylor Morgan, 18 — Minor in consumption.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Sept. 10, 2012.

Sweetwater’s cross country runners all went to a meet in Christoval to begin their season and also ran at the Angelo State meet held on Sept. 8.
At Christoval, the following individual times were recorded: Boys — Colton Scott 22:35.41; Brandon Howell 24:19.53; Girls — Ashley Bax 16:26.81; Madison Howard 17:46.59; Marissa Sanchez 18:14.18; Meagan Whitley 18:47.43; Addisyn Cleckler 19:22.41; Hannah Sanchez 22:04.18. Sweetwater was sixth as a team.

Growth continues in Sweetwater: Love’s Truck Stop begins construction

Construction began on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, for the new Love's Truck Stop in Sweetwater.
Expected completion is around the end of February 2013. The truck stop will also house an Arby's restaurant.
The land is 53.14 acres and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20.

Mayor to host meet and greet with US. Senate candidate Paul Sadler

Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham is hosting an informal “meet and greet” session for U.S. Senate candidate Paul Sadler from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 117 E. 3rd Street, on the north side of the Nolan County Courthouse square in Sweetwater. The public is invited to come by and meet Sadler.
