Westbound I-20 lane closure for bridge work begins today

Both main lanes of westbound Interstate 20 at the US 84 overpass in Nolan County are scheduled for a temporary closure for preliminary work to replace the bridge that was damaged after a collision in late September.
Westbound Interstate 20 will be closed the week of Monday, Nov. 12. Traffic will be detoured to US 84 Business and routed around the overpass before being directed back to westbound I-20. The three-quarter mile detour is the same route that was used immediately following the collision. Signs, cones and message boards will be in place to direct drivers.

Local veterans events held over the weekend

Shown is Celia Pietzch with the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #109 of Sweetwater. Pietzch was at K-Mart in Sweetwater on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, distributing poppies. Proceeds from the donations for the poppies are used for rehabilitation and welfare programs for veterans. The poppies are made by hospitalized and disabled veterans as a form of physical and psychological therapy.

Run for the WASP held over the weekend

Many people supported veterans and celebrated Veterans Day at the annual Run for the WASP 5k run/1.3 mile walk/ kids fun run on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 on Avenger Field Road. The museum's new Stearman PT-17 did flyovers during the race. There were over 45 from the Dallas/ Midland/Odessa/Big Springs/Denton/ Abilene/Azle and surrounding areas.

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital leverages the Great American Smokeout to encourage smokers to quit

Smokers who are choosing a date to put an end to their potentially deadly habit can mark Nov. 18, on their calendar. The Great American Smokeout is the day where tobacco users across the nation are encouraged to go 24 hours without smoking a cigarette or chewing tobacco and begin an effort to quit.

FFA students advancing to area competition

On Monday evening, Nov. 5, students from Sweetwater High School (SHS)--who are part of the local FFA (Future Farmers of America) program--took part in the Lone Wold District FFA Leadership Development Event (LDE) contest at Western Texas College in Snyder.

Benefit concert planned at Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium

The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium will be hosting a benefit concert Saturday, Dec. 15, to continue to raise funds for auditorium improvements. The concert will feature accomplished pianist and modern pop artist, Kristine Mirelle.
Mirelle, a Roswell, New Mexico native, was an International Guild pianist by the age of 13 and wrote her first full-length classical piece at age 8. She now writes, sings and produces her own music, which she describes as burlesque/pop.
Her performances include her piano playing, along with dance; and she sings in both English and Spanish.

Patricia L. Null, age 70, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 42 calls for service, issued three citations and made one arrest on Nov. 8, 2012.

The SPD received 18, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 300 block of Mulberry.

Calls for service:
• Assault — 1200 block of Hickory.
• Unattended death — 100 block of CR 220.

Arrested by SPD:
• Sheldon Eveland, 37 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served three civil papers and made five arrests on Nov. 8, 2012.

No. 2 Wylie rolls past S’water

ABILENE — Sweetwater knew coming into Friday’s season finale at Wylie that its playoff hopes rested on a near-flawless effort on both sides of the ball, plus some outside help. But it was second-ranked Wylie that had that kind of game instead as the unbeaten Bulldogs (10-0 overall, 5-0 in District 4-3A) struck early and often for a 55-20 victory which ended the Mustangs’ year.

Freshmen finish by beating Wylie

The Sweetwater freshman football team ended its season by beating Wylie 16-6 here on Thursday.
Sweetwater trailed Wylie 6-0 before scoring on the last 16 points.
D’Jaman West scored on a 15-yard run to tie the game and Adrian Vizzerra caught a two-point pass to give Sweetwater the lead. A 50-yard fumble return by Max Nemir for a touchdown extended the lead to 14-6, and Vizzerra ran over the two-point PAT to complete Sweetwater’s comeback.
Sweetwater had several standouts on both sides of the ball against Wylie.
