Last practice day for 13 area high school teams is Saturday

The Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) Robotics competition is drawing near. A record number of area teams will competition on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater. BEST works to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, science, technology and math through participation in a sports-like science — and engineering-based robotics competition. This year’s theme is Outer Space, which is sure to spark tons of creative robots.

Woman’s Forum seeks new members

The Sweetwater Woman's Forum met at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at JavaJax. The objectives of Woman's Forum shall be to promote acquaintance and mutual helpfulness among women and their organizations and to aid in civic and intellectual improvements.
The projects will promote the County-City Library, support the Pioneer Museum and improve the quality of life in Sweetwater by civic improvement projects. New members are welcome.

Local Edward Jones team participates in advanced training

Jason Blake, a financial advisor with the financial-services firm Edward Jones in Sweetwater and Sondra Williams, a branch office administrator, recently attended an invitation-only training opportunity at the firm's headquarters in St. Louis.
The three-day Advanced Practice Management Forum is offered to branch teams throughout the country who rank among the top third most successful in the firm in helping clients work toward their long-term financial goals. Jason Blake and Sondra Williams were among more than 180 associates, out of more than 12,000, invited to attend this session.

Updates given at SEED meeting

Various updates were given by SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) staff during the group's board of directors meeting, which took place on Monday morning, October 8, 2012.
Ken Becker, the Executive Director, discussed several companies who are already making a positive dent into local unemployment numbers. Select Energy Services, who expected to bring in up to 50 jobs, is now anticipating an increase in work force, prior to their arrival. Other local businesses, such as Mercer Well Service, are also seeing job growth.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued three citations and made three arrests on Oct. 10, 2012.

The SPD received 10, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 700 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Unattended death — 1600 block of Grand.
• Robbery — 100 block of S. Hopkins.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 15 — Possession of drug paraphernalia.
• Male juvenile, 15 — Possession of drug paraphernalia.
• Joshua Behrens, 41 — Public intoxication.

Sam McClure

October 12, 2012

Sam McClure, 63, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 at his home after a long battle with cancer.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. In lieu of flowers, family requests any donations be made to Hendrick Hospice of Abilene, 1682 Hickory, Abilene, Texas, 79601.

Sweetwater and Snyder are renewing their athletic rivalry at two venues today as the volleyball and foot-ball teams will be involved in district competition today at the Sweetwater High School gyms and Mustang Bowl, respectively.

Plowboys face huge road test; Highland is hosting Blackwell

The last two weeks have seen Roscoe’s football team pick up its first victory in nearly two years, followed by a respectable effort in a loss to Cross Plains.
But the Plowboys (1-1 district, 1-4 overall) will be facing their toughest test yet at 7:30 p.m. today at district favorite Albany. The Lions, who along with Hamlin and Cross Plains are 2-0 in district, have outscored their first two District 7-1A, Div. II foes by 105 points.
Roscoe, which has had a few starters return from in-jury in recent weeks, beat Baird 14-0 in its 7-1A opener before losing last week to Cross Plains 27-12.
