Grand Central Station lab at SMS recognized with Spirit of GCS Award

Julie Cypert's Grand Central Station Lab at Sweetwater Middle School was awarded the Spirit of GCS Award for the 2012-2013 school year from the Center for Learning and Development in Waco, TX.

SHS grad speaks at Rotary Club

Sweetwater High School graduate Robert Reyes made a visit back to the area to offer a presentation recently at the local Rotary Club meeting.
Reyes, a 1994 graduate of SHS, is also a graduate of Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is currently employed as an engineer with Halliburton in the Permian Basin, having many of his written works regarding his field published.

Local pastor named as Hendrick Medical Center Board Chair

Ward D. Hayes was recently elected as Chair for Hendrick Medical Center’s Board of Trustees. Hayes is the senior pastor for Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater.
As Chair, Hayes will preside over Board meetings, guide and direct the governance process, serve as the Board’s central point of official communication with the hospital’s CEO and represent the Board at hospital and community functions.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Feb. 25, 2013.

The SPD received 22, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 800 block of E. Arizona.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 100 block of W. Arizona.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 14 — Officer in command.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Feb. 25, 2013.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Patrick Joe Miller, 26, of Longview — Warrant/criminal mischief.

Lady Hornets play in Austin Friday

The Highland girls basketball team plays top-ranked Saltillo in the Class 1A, Division II state semifinals Friday.
The game is set to tip off at 1:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. This is the first trip to the state tournament for Highland.

SHS girls golf team places 3rd at Classic

The Sweetwater High Schol girls golf team shot a 771 total at Sweetwater Country Club for a third-place finish at the Sweetwater Classic this past weekend. Pictured from left are team members Kala Wofford, Sierra Hernandez, Amy Witt, Elise Lawrence and Corynn Martin.

SW goes 4-0 at its tourney

Sweetwater’s varsity soft-ball team had a perfect 4-0 record at its annual tournament this past weekend at the Jerry Collins Complex and now has an 8-5 season record as the Lady Mustangs host Graham today at 7 p.m.
Also, the Sweetwater JV will play Graham’s JV team today at 5 p.m.
Sweetwater’s varsity began its tournament Friday with a 17-0 victory over Winters and an 8-6 win vs. Colorado City. On Saturday, Sweetwater again defeated Colorado City 11-5 and then defeated Pecos 12-1 in its final tournament game.
