Funeral services for Verna L. Akers, 91, of Roscoe, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Roscoe Church of Christ with Dan Boren officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Snyder, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Visitation was held fro 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Akers died Friday, March 18, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Mable Frances Clark, 91, of Blackwell, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, in Sweetwater.
Mrs. Clark was cremated and no services are planned at this time.
Lorenzo Enriquez Carrillo, Jr. age 45, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, March 15, 2011.
Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, in the Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home in Amarillo.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at St. Laurence Cathedral, with Rev. Juan Rubio as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Street in Amarillo.
Funeral services for L.R. “Ish “ Wilburn, 77, of Abilene, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Mickey Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Wilburn died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at his home.
In its final game before today’s District 5-3A opener at Big Spring, Sweetwater’s softball team showed some resiliency here on Thursday by coming all the way back from a five-run deficit to tie Levelland, 5-5, at the Jerry Collins Complex.
But the Loboettes then put together the winning rally with three runs in their half of the sixth inning to break the deadlock and held on for an 8-5 victory over the Lady Mustangs.
March 17th
One person was killed in a three vehicle traffic accident on I-20 and Highway 84 between Sweetwater and Roscoe, according to DPS Senior Trooper Sparky Dean.
An 18-wheeler, a wrecker, and a truck collided, sending all three vehicles into the grassy shoulder and twisting one of the 18-wheelers onto its side.
The 18 wheeler driven by Tem Tanh from Georgia was merging onto I-20 from US 84. Tanh lost control of his rig and it rolled onto its side.
Sweetwater firefighters, along with help from the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department, Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department and the Texas Forrest Service, extinguished a fire along Highway 70, just south of CR 153 on the Burwick Ranch, beginning at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The fire burned less than 100 acres and took 5-6 hours to extinguish. The fire was thought to be caused by a truck pulling a trailer with a blown out tire, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
On Monday morning, March 14, the board of directors of SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) met for its regular meeting at the Chamber of Commerce.
Only a few action items were presented at the meeting which were approved. Among them were the minutes for the February 2011 meetings, the financial statements from January 2011 and the payment of accounts payable.
Women Infants and Children (WIC) have teamed up with surrounding hospitals to help patients get the most out of their breastfeeding experience.
WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are professionally trained through the Texas Department of State Services WIC Counselors program curriculum. Counselors are carefully chosen for their own breastfeeding experience and employed by the WIC program to assist and encourage pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
On display at the County-City Library during the month of March is the work of young talented artists within the Sweetwater school system. March is Youth Art Month.
