The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) is currently in the process of reviewing options for a new in-car video system. According to Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda, the system currently used is in need of replacement due to a shortened shelf life due to the impact felt on the electronics when riding over train tracks.
Sweetwater received a slight amount of snow on Thursday evening and early Friday morning, making it the first snow for 2013 and covering Sweetwater neighborhoods with a hint of white.
Today's forecast is mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. South wind is expected to be around 10 mph, according to the national Weather Service in San Angelo.
The Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering low-cost Afghan Pine seedlings and wildlife packets for spring planting. These trees can be used to establish windbreaks and for protective screens.
They will be taking orders through Feb. 1, 2013. There is a limited supply so place your order soon.

Bertha Mae âPreciousâ Staten 59, of Sweetwater passed away on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at her residence.
She was a longtime employee of Walls Industrial, Sweetwater Retirement Center and Sweetwater ISD.
A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at McCoy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Frankie Santiago, Rev. Jerry Jordan, Rev. Tommy Jackson, Rev. Robert Carey and Rev. Homer Reddic officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

The start of a new year means the high school bas-ketball season is about to enter the critical stage.
Thatâs certainly true for Nolan County as girls teams from Sweetwater, Highland and Roscoe all begin district play tonight.
Sweetwater (14-9) plays at Big Spring (11-10) start-ing at 6:15 p.m. It will be the first game of 2013 for the Lady Mustangs, who have been idle since going 2-2 at the Slaton tournament this past weekend.
Sweetwater opened the tournament with victories over Tahoka (52-30) and Petersburg (48-33), but lost to Slaton 49-32 and Whitharral 44-22 in its last two games.
On Thursday, Sweetwa-terâs Mustangs began 2013 by beating Coahoma for their sixth straight win. And as the final 66-37 score will attest, it wasnât close.

Clarissa Nicholee Martinez weighed eight pounds, four ounces and was 20.25 inches long. She is the daughter of Courtney and Imelda Martinez of Roscoe. She was also welcomed by a brother, Julian Martinez, 3. Grandparents are Martina and Juan Herrera of Roscoe, Melody Martinez of Sweetwater and the late Robert Martinez.
