Tonightâ€™s games against Wylie mark the final time Sweetwaterâ€™s basketball teams host a doubleheader at Mustang Gym, and it will also be the girls teamâ€™s last regular-season game.
While both teams will be facing long odds of beating Wylie â€” whose teams are a combined 16-0 in district play â€” each has shown im-provement over last season and the girls still have a shot at making the playoffs.
Sweetwater and Big Spring are 5-4 this season in District 4-3A and are locked in a third-place tie, and each has won against the other in district play.
Sweetwaterâ€™s sub-varsity basketball teams gained a split in their games Friday here against Snyder.
The JV girls were most dominant, beating Snyder 58-27 as they improved to 22-1 overall and 8-1 in district. Coming off its first loss of the season three days earlier at Monahans, Sweet-water roared out to a 24-2 lead after the first quarter and led 37-12 at halftime against Snyder.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s girls and boys powerlifters competed this past Friday at Abilene Cooperâ€™s meet.
Both SHS teams will be competing at Clydeâ€™s meet to held this Thursday and then serve as host teams for the Arlon Barnes Classic to be held here Feb. 14. The Sweetwater boys also have a qualifying meet Feb. 23 at Hawley.

Sweetwater Independent School District announced the students that will be representing the school district in the Regional Spelling Bee at Odessa College on Feb. 23.
Fifth grader at Sweetwater Intermediate School Collin Stafford, 11, will be one of those representatives. He is the son of Wes and Tammi Stafford. His hobbies are reading, basketball and football. The school bee coordinator is Melissa Howard.
Ken Becker, Executive Director of the Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development, was honored with the position of Chairman of the Board for the 2012-2013 program year. The gavel was passed at the 2012 High Ground of Texas Annual Membership Meeting. The meeting was held in Lubbock on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.
Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) recently received their scores from the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test, in which the district fared well in their tests for third through eighth grade students.
Out of the seventeen tests administered, Sweetwater ISD beat the state average in thirteen of those tests.
Two tests--4th grade writing and 7th grade reading--both came in 3% over the state's passing rate--at 74% and 79%, respectively. However, the other eleven tests saw averages anywhere from six to eighteen percent higher than the state passing rate.
On Jan. 2, local resident Travis Glasgow was taken to the emergency room with a severe bloody nose, lasting about two hours. Glasgow has had bloody noses his whole life, but none that lasted that long.
Robert E. â€śBobâ€ť Drake, 84, a long-time resident of Roscoe, died Feb. 4, 2013, in Sweetwater, with family by his side.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at McCoy Funeral Chapel of Memories, located at 401 E. 3rd Street in Sweetwater, with burial at Sweetwater Cemetery. Pastor Chester McCown will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
