Eleven Sweetwater Middle School Choir students recently competed in their Region Solo & Ensemble Contest at McMurry University in Abilene. Congratulations go to the following on earning a Superior 1st Division rating on their Solo: Terryonna Gillmore, Sara Henington, Gwan Hill, Dylan Jimenez, Cierra Knox, Abby Lynch, Abby McPherson, Jamee Rhoades and Lilly Smith.
Those earning an Excellent 2nd Division rating on their Solo are: Victoria Jimenez and Hailee Tipton.
William Alexander (Bill) Armstrong, Jr. of Sweetwater, 79, passed away Feb. 27, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Vernon Baker and Rev. Chris Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
A visitation will be held at McCoy Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, from 9-10 a.m.
Lillian Maresh Martin, age 79, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, Texas. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was born Oct. 9, 1931 in Ganado, Texas to I.E. “Ike” and Vlastie Maresh. She graduated high school from Central High School in San Angelo, and attended Angelo State where she met the love of her life Dale D. Martin. They were married July 24, 1952, at First Methodist Church in San Angelo.
Funeral services for Amos Lee Roberts, 79, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Roberts died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center.
Daryl Joe Sisk, 66, of Sweetwater, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Sisk was cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Sisk was born March 22, 1944, in Valley Mills, Texas. He married Sharon E. Carl on Nov. 16, 1992, in Nolan County. He was a retired engineer for Santa Fe Railroad and had lived in Sweetwater for the past 17 years and Brownwood before. He was a U.S. military veteran.
Survivors include his son, Charles Sisk and wife Pat of Sweetwater; and granddaughter, Crystal Lynn Sisk of Sweetwater.
A pair of Sweetwater’ athletes, Paxton Kelley and Taylor Jones, have received all-District 5-3A basketball honors for their outstanding play this past season.
Kelley, a 6-8 senior post, was named to the first team and received all-district honors for the second straight year. He averaged a team-high 15.3 points in district play and also led the Mustangs in rebounds and blocks.
Jones, a 5-9 junior guard, was named to the second team. Jones averaged 14.6 points in district play and was the team’s floor leader.

ABILENE — For the first 3 1/2 quarters of Friday’s Region II-A, Division II semifinal playoff, the Highland girls basketball team was able to match everything Newcastle could throw at them.
Holding a 47-44 lead with just 4:20 to play, the Lady Hornets appeared to be in great shape to reach the regional finals for only the second time in school history.
Era Helen Cagle, age 86, of Sweetwater, passed away on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.Â
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at O'Donnell Cemetery in O'Donnell, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.Â
Funeral services for Jerland Fred Freeman, Sr., 82, of Roscoe, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at Roscoe Church of Christ with Rian Freeman and Dan Boren officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation was held from 5-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater.
Freeman died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Edgar Rex George was born July 10, 1940, to Wilton and Nadine Hobbs George in Maryneal, Texas. Rex died on Feb. 26, in Abilene, Texas under the care of hospice.
