Roanna Stinnett, 72 of Sweetwater passed away Monday evening at an Abilene nursing center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Aspermont officiated by Pastor Jacqueax Molyneaux with burial to follow in the Aspermont Cemetery under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Aspermont.
Roanna was born in Orianna, Texas to Roland and Ila Myers Parker. She married Charles E. Stinnett on June 1, 1957, in Aspermont, Texas. Roanna was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sweetwater.
Carlos Gonzalez, 51, of Los Angeles, Calif. and former resident of Sweetwater, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, in Los Angeles, Calif.
His body will be cremated and his urn will be placed next to his wife Detsyâs urn in a niche at Forest Lawn Memorial Parks in Hollywood Hills, Calif. The service will be held Friday, Feb. 25, 2011.
Carlos was born Jan. 8, 1960, in El Paso, Texas. He lived most of his life in California, moving to Sweetwater in 1989 to live near his sister, Gloria. While in Sweetwater, he worked as a fry cook at 76 travel center and did many odd jobs.
In making the playoffs for the 10th straight year, the Highland girls basket-ball team took awhile to really catch fire.
Highland (22-11) lost its first three games of the season, and didnât get above .500 for good until beating Ira 62-29 on Dec. 21 to improve to 9-8.
But a closer look indi-cates those early âstrug-glesâ were a bit deceiving. Five of the first eight losses were to eventual playoff teams and three came against Hamlin (twice) and Roby, who are still alive and kicking.
Sweetwater High School resumes its 2011 girls sea-son on Friday by hosting the Sweetwater Golf Classic, a 36-hole event that will run through Saturday at the Sweetwater Country Club.
Play begins both days at 9:30 a.m., with a shotgun start planned Saturday.
After 4 1/2 innings of Tuesdayâs game, it looked as if the visiting San Angelo Lake View baseball team might literally walk to victory over Sweetwater in its 2011 season opener at Newman Park.
The Chiefs had just three hits, all singles, at that point, but they led 5-3 thanks primarily to 11 walks â four of them coming with the bases loaded.
But then Lake View opened the door to a Sweetwater rally, and the Mustangs pushed across five late runs to pull out an 8-5 victory.
After an 8-3 win Tuesday at Hawley, the Sweetwater High School softball team is back above .500 (3-2) entering its annual three-day tournament that began with pool games today at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Kelsi Crosson, Alicia Finn, Suede Shirley and Jerren Villa each had two hits for the Lady Mustangs against Hawley, and Taylor McKoy pitched a seven-inning com-plete game to get the victory as she allowed just seven hits. She also had seven strikeouts and gave up just three walks. Finn tripled, while both Shirley and Villa doubled and Shirley and Crosson had two RBI.

The 2nd Annual Ridin' For Cash Bull Bash was once again "an amazing event," according to event organizers Matt and Annie Miles. "We are so proud of our home town for all of the support." According to Annie Miles, there were over 1,500 people that came through the front door of the Nolan County Coliseum for the event this year, with last year's total being 1,000. "We raised $11,026 total through tickets sales and the silent auction, among other things. Last year we raised $5,714," said Miles." We also had a great turn out for the dance that followed the event, with about 400 people."
Over the next few years, millions of dollars in contracts will be awarded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
The Lubbock district office with the U.S. SBA will be holding a Government Contracting Basics workshop to help those interested find out how to sign up and gain access to these contracting jobs. The workshop will take place in Abilene on two upcoming dates.
Tears and smiles for triumph come naturally following the emotional but âeasy readâ of âThe Stories of Fayâ in the book, Deprivation Trauma, by Texas author Zalora Price. The book will be presented from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Hastings Books, 1102 E. Broadway in Sweetwater.Â
Purchased books will be signed by the author.Â
February is American Heart Month and Sweetwater residents are doing their part to raise awareness for heart health and funds for the American Heart Association. Texas National Bank employees organized a bake sale last week with all of the proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
