Depending on how you look at it, the improve-ment in the Sweetwater baseball program the past two years has been either modest or significant.
The half-full view says that the Mustangs — who start their season Tuesday by hosting San Angelo Lake View at 6:30 p.m. — won six times as many district games as in 2007 and ‘08 combined. However, Sweetwater’s district rec-ord was still just 3-7 in both ‘09 and ‘10.
But there is good reason to believe that 2011 will be the breakthrough season that leads to a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
GRADY — It’s probably not the way they prefer to do it, but the Highland girls basketball team has discovered a winning formula in the playoffs.
The Lady Hornets, for the second time in as many postseason games, found themselves trailing with one quarter to play Friday against Wink. But just as it had done three nights earlier against Robert Lee, Highland staged a furious fourth-quarter rally to pull out a 47-41 victory.

One person was airlifted by helicopter on Wednesday after an 18-wheeler crashed on the East Interchange in Sweetwater. According to Emergency Services Director Grant Madden, there were two people in the truck. The driver of the truck began coughing violently and passed out. The co-driver was belted in the passenger side of the truck and could not reach over to gain control of the truck. According to Madden, when the driver woke up, he over corrected and slid off of the road and wrecked. He was listed in stable condition. The co-driver did not sustain any injuries.
