The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department is urging everyone to practice food safety to prevent the spread of salmonella through tips and facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Salmonella, also called food poisoning, is a bacteria which commonly causes foodborne illnesses. Most recently, news headlines have been bombarded with outbreaks due in part to eggs, peanut products and other food which has been contaminated with salmonella.
Texas homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses caused by the wildfires on or after Aug. 30 have more time to apply for federal disaster recovery assistance, officials from the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today.
At the request of the state, FEMA is extending the registration deadline to Jan. 6.
As Texas families prepare for the New Year, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is four cents more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.Â The current statewide average is $3.09.

The family of Sergio Leonel Rivera has now been identified by Sweetwater authorities about his death in a Christmas morning fire on the 200 block of Lewis Front Street in Sweetwater.
The 41-year-old man died early Christmas morning in a fire in his Sweetwater home.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, firefighters received a call about smoke coming from the house just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011. "People saw smoke coming from the house and called 9-1-1."
Around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, a GMC Sierra four-door pick up truck wrecked into the emergency door in the front of the building at Brookshire's Grocery Store. According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake when parking. Both front airbags were deployed and the driver sustained an injury to her right hand. Several police officers and ambulance personnel responded to the scene with Pickrell Wrecker Services also responding to tow the truck. A chip of brick wall came off of the store front and two bread racks belonging to Mrs.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their final regular meeting of 2011 on Tuesday evening, Dec. 27 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The board approved several purchases in the meeting, including chairs for the Med/Surg patient rooms and visitor chairs. The chairs currently in place have been around for over 35 years.
43 patient chairs and 43 visitor chairs will now be purchased at the prices totaling around $25,000 and $29,000, respectively, which is under the budgeted price.
