The West Texas Art Guild is presenting "A Return to the Big Country Art Show" on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Colorado City Civic Center, located at 157 West Second Street in Colorado City.
Guests are invited to bring their art work and spend the day enjoying an art demonstration by Leada Woods of Colorado City. In addition, attendees can tour the city's museum and walk through the "Railhead Days" arts and crafts displays. At the end of the day, everyone may pick up their work.
The National WASP WWII Museum Board of Directors recently hosted a celebration of the arrival of the 1940 Boeing Stearman PT-17 on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at the WASP Museum on Avenger Field Road. Wine, cheese and refreshments were served as the Stearman flew over the museum.
Veterans who reside at Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater were honored with an appreciation plaque ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. Pictured is Steve Allen, Horace Hoskins, Mark Bolton and Billy Brice. Veterans who were unable to attendÂ theÂ ceremony were John Jordan and Willie Hanley.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently hosted its annual Safety Awards Banquet to recognize employees for outstanding efforts in vehicle, equipment and personal safety. Employees from the Nolan County maintenance section were recognized for their years of service as safe operators (no vehicle or equipment incidents) and no injury. Employees receiving awards included Joe Ashley, Danny Escobar, Elmer Green Jr., Randy Griffith, Cammy Guelker, Melissa Hinckley, Jeffery Lay, Pio MuÃ±oz, Virgil Pruitt, Mike Rosas, Sergio Ruiz, John Scifres and Kenneth Terry.

Suddenlinkâ€™s Abilene-Snyder-Sweetwater team has won an award for the highest customer satisfaction scores of any Suddenlink cable system, based on company surveys conducted the past year.Â
Chairman and CEO Jerry Kent, Chief Operating Officer Tom McMillin and West Region Senior Vice President of Operations Dave Gilles recently visited Abilene to present the award to Suddenlinkâ€™s local team, led by Director of Operations Jason Gebhart.
Anita Ruth Cave Sowders, 79, died Nov. 11, 2012. She was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Wingate and grew up there and graduated from Winters High School. She was married to Bill Hamilton and later to Alvin Sowders. He preceded her in death in 1991. She was a CNA and a member of the Eastern Star for 50 plus years. She was a Baptist.
She is survived by four children, John Hamilton and wife Connie of Sweetwater, Carole Allen and husband Lonnie of Blackwell, Susan Hamilton of Abilene and Vivian Martinez and husband Joe of Waco; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The Roscoe and Highland girls were winners in area basketball action Saturday.
Roscoe improved to 2-0 with a narrow 28-26 win at Coahoma, while Highland squared its record at 1-1 as the Lady Hornets beat Eula 41-25.
Both of Roscoeâ€™s wins have been by just two points. The leading scorers against Coahoma were Faith Boren with six points and Mirian Solis with five. Roscoe put together a second-half rally after being held scoreless in the second quarter and trailing 14-11 at halftime.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 120 calls for service, issued four citations and made five arrests from Nov. 9-11, 2012.

Blackwellâ€™s 58-54 Six-Man win over Panther Creek this past Friday means the Hornets will be taking on Loraine in the bi-district playoffs this Friday.
The teams will meet at 7 p.m. at Hermleigh, with Blackwell considered the home team. The winner will advance to face either Welch Dawson or Balmorhea in the area round.
Blackwell, the runnerup in District 8, Division II, is 5-5 overall. Loraine, which beat Trent 48-34 to claim the District 7 title, is 6-4.
Blackwellâ€™s victory this past week put the Hornets in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
