SMS sees vast improvements

The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Directors met for their final meeting of 2011 on Monday night, Dec. 19, 2011 at the Administration Building.
Sweetwater Middle School (SMS) brought their campus report to the board through the school's principal and vice principal, Jeff Withrow and Danette Price, respectively.

Staying safe during this holiday season

The holiday season is always a festive time of year, but it can also have an impact on your physical and mental health. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is urging the community to be aware of their surroundings to keep themselves and loved ones safe through this joyous time of year.
“Knowing what to look for in any environment is the first step to enjoying a safe holiday,” said Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. “Every winter, we see an increase in accidents that could have been easily avoided if the victims paid more attention to what they were doing.”

City announces holiday schedule

The City of Sweetwater City Services Department-Solid Waste Division is announcing their 2011-2012 Christmas/New Year holiday schedule.
The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed on Friday and Monday, Dec. 23rd and 26th for the Christmas holiday.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on Dec. 19, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1300 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 1600 block of Robert Lee.
• Family violence assault/impeding breath/circulation — 200 block of E. Fourth.
Arrested by SPD:
• Logan Treadway, 21 — Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served eight civil papers and made two arrests on Dec. 19, 2011.

SW hoopsters split vs. C-City

Sweetwater’s basketball teams split non-district games with Colorado City on Tuesday, with the girls playing at Mustang Gym and the boys on the road.
The girls improved to 10-9 on Tuesday as they came away with a solid 54-39 victory, but the boys (5-11) fell 47-45. The local teams are off until they play in holiday tournaments at Breckenridge and Anson, respectively, that are sched-uled to begin Dec. 28.

Gentry to speak at local church

Troy Gentry will be speaking at the Evangelical Methodist Church tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 21 at their service starting at 6:30 p.m.. Troy and Jenny are raising their money to go as missionaries to Old Mexico.
Troy is the son of John and Paula Gentry. John is the pastor of the Evangelical Methodist Church, located at 700 Lamar Street.
He will also speak during the Sunday, December 25 service starting at 11 a.m.

Holiday activities plentiful at Sweetwater Healthcare

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Dancers visited Sweetwater Healthcare Center to dance for residents in celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Also, the Roscoe High School Spanish Club went to Sweetwater Healthcare Center and sang Christmas carols in Spanish (shown above).

Special holiday deal for pet adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has six pets available for adoption.
Two of the adoptable pets are from last week and include a male heeler puppy and a female heeler puppy. Also available is a tan and black male shih tzu, two female Welsh Corgi mixes — one brown and one tan — as well as a tan and brown male terrier mix. According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.

Headliner announced for Rehab 2012 Telethon/Auction

With a great headliner, great sponsors and wonderful donors, this year’s 42nd annual West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s telethon promises to be the best yet. At seven o’clock on Jan. 21, new comer Sunny Sweeney will step into the spotlight at REHAB 2012.
Suddenlink Communications is the official sponsor and as they have for many years Area-Wide Phone Books is also helping underwrite the show. The Host Hotel for the Telethon is the MCM Elegante Suites. Telethon auction support is provided by NTS Communications.

First Apostolic donates to Goodfellows

Pictured is Ann Cavitt, secretary of the First Apostolic Tabernacle Church presenting Billie Johnston, President of Goodfellows with a check for $500. First Apostolic Tabernacle Church has been collecting money at their church to send to the Blue Mountain Mississippi Children's Home. They were recently notified that the home had been closed and their congregation decided to donate the money to Goodfellows to help purchase food for needy families. Senior Pastor at First Apostolic Tabernacle Church is Winnie Glasglow and Co-Pastors are Lester Cavitt and Travis Glasgow.
