Castillo is regional medalist for SW but team bid falls short

Sweetwater will be repre-sented by Alex Castillo at the Region 1-3A boys golf tournament next week.
But Castillo’s teammates won’t be joining him at San Angelo’s Bentwood Country Club. While Castillo shot 73-229 to place fourth among district medalists, the team’s fourth-place finish after a 314-958 wasn’t good enough in Tuesday’s final round — which was held at Abilene’s Maxwell Municipal Golf Course — to advance the Mustangs to the regional tourney.

Snyder win ends playoff drought for Lady ‘Stangs

Tuesday’s 9-7 Snyder win over Wylie ended a 16-year playoff drought for Sweet-water’s softball team dating all the way back to the pro-gram’s very first year.

Here are Highland’s JV boys results from last week’s season-ending district track meet held in Blackwell.
The JV boys scored 41 points to place fourth in the division.
At Blackwell
200 — Kaden Nachlinger 3rd (27.24); Laramie Thompson 6th (29.43)
400 relay — 3rd (54.62 — Zack Cornett, Kaden Nachlinger, Kevin Pantoja, Laramie Thompson)
800 relay — 3rd (1:59.40 — Zack Cornett, Kaden Nachlinger, Kevin Pantoja, Laramie Thompson)
Long jump — Laramie Thomp-son 6th (13-3 3/4)

Finalist announced for SHS Athletic Director

Sweetwater Independent School District has announced the finalist for the Athletic Director/Head Football Coach at Sweetwater High School.
Shane Mobley, presently the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at 5A Seguin High School, will be presented for approval to the SISD School Board on Monday evening.
Mobley coached at Sweetwater from 2004-2008, serving as the defensive coordinator. During his time there, SHS compiled a 41-12 record and a trip to the 2005 3A State Semi-Finals.

Update: Taste of Sweetwater

Many members of the community showed their support for the local Meals on Wheels program by attending the annual Taste of Sweetwater on Monday, April 9, 2012. Over 300 people showed up for the event, directly benefitting the program, part of the Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), delivering hot meals every weekday to over 200 homebound residents in Sweetwater and Roscoe. According to Director Tonya Challis, the event raised about $3,000 for the Meals on Wheels program.

Over $6K raised on Library Tag Day

The Women's Forum of Sweetwater sponsors Library Tag Day each year to benefit the County-City Library. This year the event took place on Wednesday, April 4, with all proceeds going to the library.
The total amount raised was $6,856.18. Donations come from local businesses, civic groups and individuals wanting to keep the local library growing and thriving.

No shortage of Easter eggs

The Sweetwater Jaycees hosted their annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Fraley Park, bringing hundreds of children to the park to hunt for thousands of eggs — some filled with prizes and tickets for large Easter baskets.
The hunt is only one of the events hosted by the Jaycees, as they also put on a Thanksgiving Day Feed and Santa Claus call-in for the community and give to many local organizations. They also host the World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up, along with the Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant.

The SPD received 39, 911 calls.

Fred Elias Nayfa

Fred E. Nayfa of Sweetwater, Texas, went home to be with his Lord on April 10, 2012. He was born on August 30, 1917, in Greenville, Texas to Elias and Almaz Nayfa, immigrants from Lebanon. While attending Oklahoma City University in 1938, he met Jo Farris. They were married eight years later in Gainesville, Texas on April 17, 1946 by a retired Methodist minister. Fred and Jo had a special love and commitment to each other and he was a loving and caring person who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Nora Faye Grantham

A private family memorial service will be held later this week for Norma Faye Grantham, 68, of Sweetwater, with family members officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Grantham died Monday, April 9, 2012, at her home.
